Can I give my dog "people" calcium?

One of my pugs is starting to get delicate in her old age, so I’m starting to make homemade dog food for her. Most of the recipes I’ve turned up mention adding bone meal or ground eggshell to homemade “mutt loaf,” but I’ve got a honkin’ big bottle of calcium pills that I take myself. Can’t I just crush up some of those pills and add the resulting powder to the dog food?

I would definitely speak with your vet, and maybe even take the pills with you so that he could help you work out a ‘dosage’, but I see no reason why you could not give them to your dog.

I have kept iguanas and had to give them calcium to combat bone disease. I would take the pills and run them through the coffee grinder until they were a powder and then add them to their food. definitely cheaper than Repto-Vite, and my vet said they worked just as well.
