Can I mix my own watercolors?

Not that I think I can do better than Windsor and Newton or Sennelier, but I’m curious: Can I manufacture watercolor paints on my own? I read in a book that watercolors are little more than pigment, gum arabic, and some sort of gummy sugar, like corn syrup or honey. I can get the sugar at any grocery, and I can get gum arabic at any art store (I have some on hand). Art stores also sell pigment, but I’m not sure if any kind is better than any other.

Is there a standard recipe for making these? What’s the deal on honey vs corn syrup?

Is there any advantage to making my own?

Should I make only enough to use in any one painting session, or should I invest in babyfood jars to store large batches?

Here’s a site that might be of interest: http://www.handprint.com/HP/WCL/water.html

Wow. Yeah. This page especially explains it all very well. Looks a little more complicated than just mixing 3 things in a plastic cup.

Thanks!
