I am trying to find out if a particular website has ever been mentioned on this board, either in direct text or with tags. I think that because of its subject matter, it is highly likely that someone from the SD would know about them. My initial search came up empty, but I don’t know if the .org ending is too short to be searchable, if there truly are no references to it here, or if all references are inside URL tags. The textual part of the URL (before the .org) is a very common word and comes up time and again on the boards. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
A search for [ straightdope.com ] returns 750 hits. I checked 10 or so, and they all had the word ‘straightdope.com’ in plain text, or as part of the label for a named url.
None had it as a hidden part of a url.
You might want to do the same search, and check a few more, but it looks to me like the answer to your question is no, search doesn’t look at the address part of a named link.
Your other option, if this is a site you think some people would be aware of, is to start a thread asking about the site–maybe mention you were curious if the site had been mentioned on the board. Someone might be able to suggest a keyword for you, or do a search themself on some unexpected keyword and find the past thread.
No promises, but if you are seriously (as opposed to intellectually) curious, it might be worth a try.
Oops… sorry, I didn’t see Mr. Morris’s reply until just now. I hope this isn’t considered resurrecting a zombie thread.
The website I was looking for was secular.org, an advocacy organization “whose purpose is to amplify the diverse and growing voice of the nontheistic community in the United States.” Given the number of agnostics and atheists on the boards, and the number of threads in GD that relate, I thought someone might have either cited them or referred to them.
