Can I use 2 internet connections on the same pc?

I have internet with clearwire . i also have a samsung blackjack i can tether to the pc. could i use them both to get lots of bandwith? for example web browsing with the bllackjack and movie downloads with clearwire? im running windows xp

In theory, yes, but in practice, not really.

I don’t believe Win XP knows how to split up communication between two connections. In other words, how do you tell the web browser to use the Blackjack for browsing, but use the DSL for downloading?

Also, cellular broadband tends to be painfully expensive. Our work cell phones have an “all you can eat” plan for web access on the phone, but using the phone as a “modem” for use with a computer kicks you into by-the-byte pricing.

The way I always explain this to people is to picture siamese twins trying to run in opposite directions. That’s about what your computer will do with 2 net connections.

Sure it’s possible; it should happen automatically. But what will happen is that most of the traffic will go over one connection - your default router. Only when it can’t get there - say the connection is down or maxxed out - will it try the second connection. Load balancing and teaming (where the load is dynamically split) are funky juju best left or servers and routers.

However, there is a downside: the latency on the mobile connection is likely to be vastly longer than the other, and the more secure sites (like banks) may kick you off because they see your ID coming from more than one NIC.

Make sure you understand the terms of your mobile phone contract before using it as an internet connection.

If you use a dual WAN router (There are several available, I have the hotbrick version) you can do bandwidth consolidation. It won’t speed up the transfer of ONE file, but can make web pages load faster, as the pictures are typically separate files. You can also be downloading multiple files at the same time, and thus be using both connections. It also works nicely using some of the peer-to-peer protocols that TPTB would prefer I don’t elaborate on.
