Can I use my Cable Modem when I move?

I know phone companies like you to buy a modem from them when you hook up to cable. But what I was wondering is can I use my current cable modem when I move to another state? Actually, I am not moving, but my wife and I have two homes, one in CT and one in AZ. We have a spare cable modem that we would like to bring to AZ. Is this possible? Yes, cable is available in the area of AZ where our house is…

The short answer is… probably. Cable modems are built to different standards… AFAIK, most cable providers have settled on the same standards - meaning that you can carry the modem from point A to point B. But I would look into getting the AZ one free. I had one in GA before I moved to NC, but Time Warner had a “free modem-free installation” dealie, so I just checked the old modem in the trash.

Some companies will let you, others wont. We had a modem when we moved into this apartment building, but our provider wouldn’t let us use it despite it being IDENTICAL to the one they had. Since the price of cable wouldn’t change even if we did use our own modem, we just didn’t argue and let them install theirs. The old one is sitting on a shelf in the closet. Since it was originally bought off a provider in Quebec, when we move back we might be able to get the same provider and use it again.
