So, my boyfriend bought me a Powerhorn for my birthday about a month ago. I’ve played with it and am really quite amused by it. But I’m not using it the way I want to. The whole reason I asked for it was because I wanted to teach stupid drivers a lesson. I want to make comments on their driving. The thing is, I have no idea if it’s illegal to yell at drivers who cut me off, run stop signs, speed thru residential areas etc… with my Powerhorn.
I really don’t want to find out by being issued a ticket either. I’ve thought about going to my local police station, but the lady who fields questions isn’t really helpful. I’ve gone down to the police station in the past to ask questions, and she usually tells me she’s not from the area and doesn’t help me very much.
I tried Googling, but I don’t know how to look for what I’m looking for.
I’ve often mused over putting in a scrolling LED sign in my car to perhaps have a passenger enter text comments into to let other drivers know what I think about them. What can I say; I’m very petty and angry at the sh***y drivers in this city.
I think that similar laws might apply, but perhaps my approach would be seen as less distracting to other drivers - maybe more legal too, as a powerhorn could easily, even lacking formal identification as such, be assumed as coming from a law enforcement officer.
All kidding aside, I’m sure a police officer in your jurisdiction could find a rule in the local motor vehicle code to charge you with violating if you tried this- a bullhorn is a pretty large object to have in front of your face as you’re trying to drive.
Now if you had one of those new hands-free bullhorns…
Back when I drove a run-down old Nova, I had fantasies about getting one of those big air horns that locomotives use and bolting it to the roof of my car.
The next time I came up behind someone who was yapping on their cellphone while driving, I’d hit the horn and BRAAAAAAAAAP!!!
I would think that the problem would be the distraction of other drivers, thus possibly causing an accident. “Getting even” is generally a very bad idea, and best left to cops who are paid to enforce the law.
I had a tape of a railway locomotive really sounding as it was about to run over you.
Bell ringing, Whistle blowing, steam hissing and blowing.
If that won’t startle a wayward driver nothing else will.
Forget about teaching other drivers a lesson. If they wanted to learn, they’d be in a drivers’ ed car. If you holler at some frazzled guy who’s already angry at somebody else, you’re liable to find yourself in a road-rage situation. Some rage monkey will run you off the road or fire a gun in your direction.
Do not fool with the minds of bad drivers. They don’t need any more distraction. In fact, keep your distance. A bad driver will have an accident soon, and you don’t want to be there. He has done you a favor by alerting you to his incompetence.
I agree that, while it might be gratifying, using a bullhorn or similar to chastise other drivers is not likely to help and may well provoke real problems.
Part of driving, unfortunately, is coping with less-than-stellar performance by others. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
Who cares if it’s legal or not? It’s foolish; that’s all you need to know. Aside from the fact that it’s dangerous to startle people while they’re driving, you never know what kind of nuts are out there, and who’s carrying a gun. Why take that chance?
