Can I wash my hair with dog shampoo

I have dandruff, which normally I enjoy because the ladies love it but I’m wanting to use shampoo to get rid of it anyway. That head and shoulders crap does nothing. Coal tar shampoo kind of helps, but it can take a while to kick in and even then its not a certain thing.

I’ve read that anti-fungal shampoos can be extremely effective against dandruff, but I get the impression those aren’t on the market anymore. The sellers I do find on amazon tend to seem iffy, like I don’t know if I’d get a legit product if I bought it. Nizoral doesn’t seem to be on the market anymore, when it is it is either overpriced or iffy.

I found this product

Which is a shampoo that has the anti-fungal ketoconazole in it (same as nizoral, but I don’t know the concentration), it is for dogs but it has the same anti-fungal ingredient. I have no idea what % of Benzethonium Chloride is in it, but looking online the FDA is ok with 0.1-0.2% solutions for topical use.

So what dangers would I be running if I decided to use this as an anti-dandruff shampoo on my human head?

I have seborrhoeic dermatitis on my face and scalp. My dermatologist prescribed 2% Ketoconazole ointment for my face and the shampoo version for my scalp. They both work. I wouldn’t play around with any medication not prescribed for humans.

Oh, and what ladies love dandruff?

It can be a little ruff on the scalp.

And, it’ll make you want to scratch behind the ears.

I think you’re all barking up the wrong tree.

Get the dog shampoo with pyrethrins, and your flea worries will be over.

It will make your hairdo quite fetching.

Come on now, folks. I love a good pun as much as the next guy, but this is GQ and we’re supposed to get some serious answers in first.

You guys are full of shih. I ask a simple question about using an unlicensed animal product on myself to save a few bucks and in return for that all I get is a bunch of jokes.

I wouldn’t use it because they probably used animals to test it. So, it is not PETA approved.

Stuff never hurt my hands or anything while washing a dog with it, so it can’t be so bad that trying it once will hurt you. They wouldn’t be selling it if the human washing the dog is going to have his skin fall off, especially since the typical dog is going to get it all over you anyway. Try it and see if anything bad happens. The worst that can happen is they have to take you to the vet to be put down.

I don’t know how to answer that. Dogs and other mammals have the same basic skin that we do and it isn’t like their products are deadly to us. Mane and Tail was a fad hair care product back in the 90’s because it was so good as horse hair conditioner and came in huge bottles. I think people still use it today. It probably isn’t going to hurt you even it isn’t officially ‘approved’ but it may not fix anything either.

The only thing I can tell you is to try it sparingly and see if it works for you and to see if you have any allergies to it. Try it on the top first and add more area later if you like the results. However, in my experience, scalp flaking is often caused by nutritional deficiencies that can be better addressed through diet. Add a whole lot of green-leafy vegetables to your daily diet and not only will your dandruff improve but also your overall health and also your fingernails. That is the secret to ‘rich girl’ hair but it applies to almost everyone. Even a daily multi-vitamin can help as long as you are patient and don’t expect instant results.
