Computer animation has come so far. Do the animators devote much effort to getting the lip and mouth movements precisely in sync with what characters are saying? Or is it just a more sophisticated form of muppets opening and closing their yaps? Are there any cartoons with animation so precise that lip readers can pick up what the characters are saying?
If the animation is aided by motion-capture data (of the face), I would expect the lip movements to be recognisable.
Gollum from the LOTR series could be used as a test case.

Lip reading is not as accurate as people think, as multiple sounds can have the same lip-shape but different tongue-shapes. For example, my wife once worked with a woman named Amber at a legal agency for deaf women. Amber could hear but her parents and many children she knew growing up were deaf. They used to call her “Hamburger”; look in a mirror and say “Amber” and “Hamburger”, and you’ll notice your lips look much the same for both words.
