Some specialized drones, agras mg 1 for example, can carry even 10 kilograms of weight. If you somehow combined 5 to 10 of them, would they be able to carry a average person?
Of course, a single bad boy like this costs almost 10.000 dollars, so you might as well buy a small used plane for the prices of 5 to 10 of them, but nonetheless, the price of drones will probably go down as the years pass and more people buy them.
Also, if a person could ride this contraption and they carried a controller with them, would it’s signal range be basically unlimited? Now you can only go a mile, 5 or whatever away from the controller until the signal is lost, but I suppose that riding in it would solve this problem.
Plenty of people are trying to make this work but on a single platform. One multi motor ‘drone’. In a quick search, I saw one multi drone platform pick up a medium sized guy. Didn’t seem to get out of ground effect though. There is plenty on youtube.
If you were carrying the controller, your range would not be limited by the controller range, but it would still be limited by the duration that the battery can supply power. The Agras MG-1 that you mentioned has a flight time of 10 minutes when carrying its maximum load (22.5 kg), although it’s longer if the load is lighter so presumably you could mitigate this somewhat in your scenario by using more drones so each would carry less load.
