I have one of these. A couple of days ago my two large dogs were playing bitey-face in the bedroom, snagged the cord and the radio crashed to the ground. The control panel on top appears to be a sealed unit, and also appears to have gotten loosened up, or something. Now the buttons are not responsive - I was able to set the time and one single radio station after much jabbing and poking, but the volume control appears to be kaput, as well as the other five radio station pre-set buttons.
Do you think this is fixable? And if so, who should I call?
If not, does anyone have a recommendation for a replacement? I’ve certainly gotten my money’s worth - I’ve had this thing for 13 years; it’s woken me up every morning with music, and I leave it on the classical station during the day, for the dogs.
I’m sad that it is broken; I miss it already. I like having a compact, nice-sounding radio right next to my bed.
The newest Bose III seems like a great update of this product.
Hard to say if your system can be fixed. Could be the control panel simply got jarred out of place. But, it may have broken the support posts. If those posts are broke You’ll never get it to snap back in place. Just getting the unit apart sounds like a challenge. It’s one of the reasons I gave up servicing electronics. Equipment made today isn’t really meant to be serviced.
^ Plus, IF you can find someone to fix it, and IF it takes less than 6 months (because of the back-log), the cost will probably be 1/3 - 1/2 the cost of a new one (and will probably work for 4 more months, TOPS). I grieve for you, my friend, I really do. In my twilight years, I’m trying to convince myself not to try fixing stuff anymore. It’s just not worth your time, money and aggravation. Let it go.
::shaking uncontrollably with frustration and empathy::
PS Put those dogs to work 'til they can replace it.
Well poop, I suppose you two are right. There’s a Bose factory outlet store a little north of me, maybe I can get a deal on a new one; one that I can sync my phone to. Hmm.
One nice thing - the price hasn’t gone up on those things! I swear that’s what I paid for my busted one in 2001.
^ Now, now, AB, the guy just got a miniscule break in his dog-infested life ( I love dogs) ; let’s allow him his moment–plus he DID want to get it repaired, and the DIY, can-do, pioneer spirit attitude should be applauded.
Plus, if you want to start a list of grossly-inflated-prices products, you’re going to need at least 2 more message boards to complete it.
The older model had buttons, the ones he is talking about is 13 years old. You really should call the Bose service department. Part of the high price of their systems is really good customer service. They may offer you a trade in value on a new one, wouldn’t surprise me at all.
My mom has one of these. Do you still have the remote and is it working? You should be able to control everything with the remote. They even make a large button remote for people that don’t like the smaller one.
Batty crazy dog lady. (Thanks, kaylasdad99.) The Spoiled Rotten-Weiler and the Labradork got yelled at but they didn’t think it was a big deal.
I know, I know, Bose products are derided all over the internet as overpriced junk. But I liked mine, it worked very well for me. Sadly, I no longer have the remote.
Anyhow, I did call Bose CS (thanks Hampshire, for saving me the trouble of looking it up.) They don’t service those any more, too old. And the remotes they have now are not compatible with mine. But they will sell me a brand new one for half-price if I send in my old one. With tax and shipping that would be about $270.00; which is somewhat cheaper than some of the Bose alternatives I was looking at online, such asthis one.
Hey, chiroptera, I had an idea: if it’s the remote you’re after, I spotted some on Ebay. You might want to start there, then if not satisfactory, take Bose up on their offer–it’s not a bad offer IMHO, if you have your heart set on Bose (I wanted a pair of their PA speakers back in the day).
As a matter of fact you might get two remotes, if cheap enough. Keep #2 in the back of the sock drawer for another rainy day.
burpo, that is not a bad idea, thanks. I will email a couple of those sellers and ask if that would work with my unit (Bose says not because I have the “original” Wave unit which is apparently a relic from a different age, but they were trying to get $250 from me while still making a profit, so who knows.)
There are probably model numbers on the backs of the remotes that can tell you if it will match your unit.
I mean, how many other people have had the same kind of accident you’ve had, except their’s was totalled but the remote survived? Maybe the same year/model? Won’t hurt to check. $15 might put you back in business, or it’s a cheap experiment, and you get the trade-up.
I’m sure (well, pretty sure) I can’t open it up and even if I did those PC boards and tangles of wires would utterly confound me - but thanks for that link! I will call them tomorrow.
You’re right, the model number is printed on the bottom. I’m going to call that shop SmellMyWort linked to first and see what they say.
It’s true I’d rather not spend $250 if $15, or even $100, will get my little bedside radio back.
*They must stay busy; I just called and they “were assisting other customers.” I’ll try them tomorrow.
