Can one keep their AOL email address if the cancel AOL?

I’m wondering about this. I hate AOL, but would like to keep my email. I thought people could have aol email free even if they didn’t have the service.

Does anyone know how you would go about keeping the email while canceling the service?

Thanks

You can’t.

Sure you can keep your AOL email address after you terminate service with them.

One problem, though.

It will not work. Your email account no longer exists and/or is no longer accessible once you terminate service with AOL.

You can’t keep your AOL email address if you cancel AOL. As far as I know, they don’t give free email services to people. Quite aside from that, the only way you can read email sent to an AOL email address, aside from using the AOL application, is to use their web portal, which again requires that you be a fees-paying registered AOL member–that is, you can’t use Eudora or Outlook or pine or whatever your preferred email program might be to fetch or send your AOL email.

(Someone told me Claris Emailer used to be able to do so, but AOL did something to mess it up)

They offer a low-end service for those who access the Net another ISP. Read about it here

I remember reading on cnet a while back that email address is the number 1 reason people don’t leave aol.

Really it isn’t so bad making the switch. I had AOL for over a year just to keep my email address (well I made the switch but my wife refused to untill they rasied their BYOA rate $5 which was just beyond the pail.

No doubt you already know this, but there may be impressionable persons reading this, so it is best to note that the phrase is beyond the pale. (Although perhaps you were stating that you had decided it was time to “kick the bucket” with respect to your subscription.)

I believe AOL have different low cost plans that you can subcribe to that allows you to keep your AOL account. That way you pay the small monthly fee but don’t have to sign onto AOL to view or send your AOL mail just sign onto AOL thru a internet connection and goto AOL.com and use the mail system.

But other than the small fee once you cancel AOL your member ID is then cancelled also.

For computer help questions other than that here is a great site.
For computer questions go to a Canadian site which is really excellent and is free of course.
