Well, maybe if he met you – just you, as in not at a DopeFest – he would argue with the same vigor he does here. But why, at a DopeFest, would he want to harsh everyone else’s mellow by getting into it with you? Ignoring you would be the only polite thing to do. I’ve never seen him back down from an argument before (not that I know him anywhere but here), so I don’t think it’s cowardice.
Shoot, Jodi said it better than me.
Especially the part about the dramatic persona being in how we say it, not what we say. I am certainly a conservative IRL, but hopefully not as much a asshole.
ISTM that the Cut Direct is the real-life version of the ignore list. I would operate the opposite way from gobear - I would interact with people IRL even if they were on my ignore list.
I don’t currently have anyone on my ignore list, although I skip over some people’s posts, and I seek out others.
If I behaved IRL as I often do in the Pit, I would expect to receive the Cut Direct very often. I suspect I am on a few ignore lists. No worries.
When we post, we are addressing the board at large. Anyone who cares to interact is free to try, and then we can individually decide whether or not to pick up the thread.
Maybe it is not logically consistent to cut someone in person, but continue to respond to their posts. But people can (in my view) decide how much, if any, of their cyber-life carries over to real life, and vice versa.

Shodan
Hmm, Shodan has a point.
Perhaps the best scenario is not to ignore Leander, but to seek him out, sit him down, ask him what it is about me that annoys him so, and if his reply seems sensible, to make the necessary changes.
That’s far too reasonable. You two gonna get us all holding hands and singing “Kumbaya” next? :dubious:
Liberal rubbish!
I’m not sure how my meatspace (love that term!) personna compares with drop, the creature online, but since my acting teachers would say I can’t act I’m guessing they’re about the same.
Mmmm, harshmellow. Washed down with a big ol’ glass of Haterade.
Now THAT’S funny! Any deep hatred I was harboring for you has been replaced with a chorus of guffaws. (just kidding!) (about the hate thing, that is…I’m still guffawing)
You know, while we’re on the topic…
Before Joe_Cool and JerseyDiamond were banned and/or went into exile, I was friendly towards them. I truly didn’t realize how excerable they were. And I’ve been feeling like an asshole about it ever since. I was definitely in the wrong. If my friendliness in any way contributed to any increased distress for anyone, I am very sorry.
Gladly. And perhaps you can do the same.
What you’ve written above makes me think I may have misjudged you.
(But I’m still not going to sing “Kumbaya”… )
I love it when a pit threat balances itself backout.
I’ll admit that I had the fever of the converted early on in my political life, but I like to think I’ve largely gotten past that. Mainly because of here, where I’ve gotten called on my arguments and not having the reading to back it up. I argue not because I Am A Socialist And Therefore I Am Right; I argue because I Am A Socialist Who’s Read Up On The Subject And Am Pretty Sure I Know What I’m Talking About.
Sure there’s still vitriol, and that’s not always a good thing. But more and more I try to reserve it for sneaky underhanded tactics rather than the political opinions expressed by the opposition. That’s what polemics are for.
