Fine, you want to add military service of a certain rank/duration, great. In this era, we’re in danger of totally unqualified people who have what it takes to create a following becoming president. The parties can’t give us another Trump, it’s a clear indication the process is broken.

What for? Both have the requisite experience, the necessary intelligence and temperament, and both would make fine presidents. What needs to be done is make it so obviously unqualified candidates cannot be nominated.

Hmmm…
35 years old or older? Check.
Natural born citizen? Check.
Resident in the US for 14 years? Check.

Looks like the last qualification is if enough people have confidence in him to vote him the winner of the Electoral College.

The GOP might just be able to get away with changing the nominee at the convention. Of course, since it’s probably the smart choice now, it won’t happen. Republicans don’t do smart.

The internal contradiction in the current Republican coalition will eventually cause a rift between the good governance wing and the angry wing. But neither can survive without the other right now.

What happens when Trump loses? You think the Republican establishment is going to be able to stand there and say “We told you so, now get back in line”?

No way. The angry wing is GONE from the Republican party at the national level after 2016. Establishment Republicans really only care about money. The angry wing doesn’t give a shit about money.
