Can some people extinguish streetlamps by means of their bodily emanations?
is the column i read…

What a RUSH!

MORE INFO NEEDED!

This column stuck out to me personally because it IS a question i have been asking MYSELF for over ten years- especially the “or am i just crazy” part of it. Although there is still no solid (meaning tested and prooved by acceptable scientific method) tangible PROOF that this anomaly exists, this article at least acknowledges the possibility. I wanted to state my own observations after reading, and discovering that I am not the only one who has thought this about themselves…

First off I have always and especially now attempted to observe and form thoughts on this subject as logically as possible, with full recognition that it is Impossible for me to think or even make a statement here without being superbly biased. I have tried to form my conclusions, statements and even opinions from the view of a scientist in a lab testing a theory with the well known “Scientific Method” (which, if the reader here doesnt know and understand I advise them to research it or stop reading now). I do not have a lab or controlled variables (like lights with different chemicals or people with rare body chemistry) but i have done my best throughout the years to prove to MYSELF that I am not INSANE, delusional or experiencing repetitive hallucinations- the only Acceptable standard by which I measure my sanity is that of the modern scientist- apply known proven scientific methods for harvesting and gathering data when attempting to render a theory into practicality- and Of Course- Physical Proof is Always Best.

<note- i have walked, in my 26 years, more than the average american- for 8 years of my life i lived in a rural area and had to walk everywhere- walking 10 miles to me used to be relative in comparison to the average person walking 3 city blocks- my girlfriend at one time lived 12 miles- during our 2 year relationship i walked to her house *at least * 4 times a month- and back to mine- also for 5 years my work enviroment demanded an *average walking distance * of 19 miles a day- a day equating 12 straight hours- over a count of 365 full workdays measured in 1 and a half years at the same location and job position, then multiplied by 3)

the biggest personal variable to me is how many times i have or have not noticed the lights turning off- Im fairly confident Ive missed it many many dozens of times, yet even with that I still have seen this happen often enough in my life to notice the occurance as an oddity… , until now, I havent ever heard this discussed… outside of the 2 repeating factors I have experienced- telling someone about this… thing… that I “do” to streetlights I usually get reluctant responses- others stating belief or non belief has not been an issue because I have not spoken of this to enough to observe variables in response and I personally think I receive delayed or reluctant responses because those I have told where probably not wanting to say aloud that I am "NUCKING FUTS!"
The 2nd repeating factor- there is an overly zealous acceptance that my statement is truth based on fact, often followed by personal storys of e.s.p., psychic phenomena, near death experiences ghosts or some other such rubbish.

A final factor, a sad one almost, is that I am so used to this happening and so used to NOT talking about it that I have accepted it as practice… so for the last year or so I havent paid attention or allowed myself to think much on the subject… fear on insanity is my only plea…before today i believed i was the only one… and that all my observations… just a desperate attempt to convince myself that i was not delusional.

Plus I have gotten lazier… so less walking… less exposure to streetlights in general and especially the ones in more secluded areas.

The wildcard is the many times people have been with me and seen this happen

REGARDLESS of ANY Scientific Research Data known to the Public or to my Own Self I KNOW One Thing to be Physically True-

Streetlights DO Turn OFF When **I ** Walk By them-

Observations based on what I call a “Seeing is Believing” premise-

Only seems to happen when i am walking. I use “seems” here because of variables that exist in other methods of transportation. (I read a long time ago mans average walking speed is 4-5mph- but i walk a little faster- avg 6mph and at work its closer to 7- tested that with a clip on my hip attached to my leg- at work and otherwise- then averaged the results from 365 (12 hr activity range )days worked over a period of 1 yr and 6 months- not fullproof but close as i can get all alone)

Usualy not consecutive- more often than not its every 5th or 6th streetlight… seems to me the last light that turned off is usually close or at the vanishing point on the horizon in my perspective

Happens with the White ones very rarely- mostly- (i guess here) 90% that i “effect” are the Orange ones

Doesnt seem to happen in Densly populated areas, especially in large cities, be it commercial or *residential * zones- but it does appear streetlights that have less “contact” (gosh that just SOUNDS crazy lol) with human bodies, or even rather, less duration of time occured with singular individuals- are often more suceptable to this event than those under constant exposure to the human presence. The Orange Streetlights turn off around me a lot more often- most noticeably in Supurbs or roads more than (another “guess-timate”, remember that in school?) 30 miles away from a Major city, Chicago, L.A. or Atlanta being “Major”
I havent ever had one turn off around me then *seen * it turn back on- until or unless it was the next day and a timer but I have had them turn off and turn on when out of site, then upon walking by again observed flickering or another switch to off.

Never happens when the sun is out and the sky isnt dark- i know that sounds like a stupid statement but it is a valid test factor in determining if this is my own delusion or physical fact- thus a valid statement in which I have excluded the (hopefully) obvious

This anomaly is not 100% consistent with me-

I say roughly its 65% of the time that I see, can not deny rather, streetlights go out as I am walking by them

When I am in the company of another human ( I have not observed dogs and animals to disable or intefere with this “ability” ) it seems to occur a bit less- about 45% of the time, I will also state here that even though I see an obvious difference between Alone/Accompanied the anomaly still happens so often in my presence that often others have noticed this happening around me. So my less than is higher than peoples Average. There IS an average- almost Everyone has seen a streetlight or two just go out.

My personal opinion on this anomaly is that human bodies somehoew DO effect certain types of streetlights- in a way that modern scientist are un-aware of or can not explain- this results only from ignorance, false premise and too much sociological implication in current scientific researchin my humble opinion----------- at this point i think “What great genius minded scientist would bother testing this when he/she could be applying that talent in more sought after and socailly accepted matters of importance and relevance”

My second thought, just after the first, is -

"There is so much about existence as a whole- life, biology, human brains, psychology, applied physics, gravity, the universe and Perception that is unknown- if this anomaly could be tested under controlled methods and extensive time, 50 years being optimal, with as many controls and variables feasible, along with ** generations of repetitive humans and (wildcard) random people ** … its possible this event may then be observed as an established practicality of reality. Explained; a ** whole new doorway in physics, biology and scientific practice would be opened…* then… We would have ourselves a “cornerstone” by which we could test and compare all those “sought after and socially accepted matters of importance and relevance currently under research”*

one never can tell what **huge implications ** exist behind small occurences… at least, not without methodical research in controlled enviroments.

think! what we learned just observing what happens when a small marble and a bowling ball, of different mass (DUH) and density (weight) are dropped at the *exact same time * from the top of the exact same building… (if you dont know, discluding variables like extreme wind or weather, they both hit the ground at the same time) - **Gravity effects all (or in my opinion Most Known) things the same! **

Arent we all tired of being reminded of old theory and the battles fought to get new ones accepted?

“The Earth is Flat.”

“The Sun, and Planets in our Galaxy revolve around a center, which is planet EARTH.”

If you read this far* THANK YOU,* I wont go on naming them as we all get the point…

… sorry about the rant… but after all these years stumbling on that question and the responses it got is to me very very… comforting… i know im not alone…

I look forward to more input, especially replies, comments, debate, opinion, ANYTHING!

Cmon… I KNOW I am NOT the Only one who has been secretly worried they are certifiably crazy cuz they think that lights turn off around them! Lets bring this topic back to life and get more data!

my final afterthought is-

OR I am Insane and Delusional to the point of permanent ongoing visual hallucinations!!!

(P.S. Apologys and Afternotes- If i sound condescending here… or whatever words you want to use to describe “A person who deals with people in a patronizingly superior manner” I am sorry- my life and line of work has resulted in my own conviction that Most people are Ignorant- yet very obviously NOT stupid… my favorite for instance is expressing the need I feel to define ignorance here so that the context I’ve used it in will be understood properly- I have actually seen physical altercations over one calling another Ignorant…I went easy on the “detailed explanation of definitions and literal context application direction implied to the reader/listener’s comprehensive perception within my statement” here though because I suspect that this sites Admins and especially the group that comes up with “answers” are at least and probably Far more intelligent than I )

To the Site Admins- anywhere I can find out what I options only paying members have? I am not willing to search so many Pages with so many threads manually- I see no Forum Search option… no offense but as a site admin I know that kind of option can be user account allocated- the “post reply” script enabled on the currently viewed page would rock! or a direct link to the forum threads associated with viewed topic, if any exist )

valid points are also made already- most to the discredit of my statement above-

they all do it i just notice the ones that go off around me-

neurotic-

still…

its the memorys i have of other ppl around me actually getting freaked out…

with me it isnt just this light switch thing that happens… theres lots of other little things that often make folks… jumpy… around me…

just because current known scientific theory doesnt support this event to be possible doesnt mean that is fact… to believe that is folly- even if i AM just nuerotic… before i will ever, in my life, consider something i experience to be extraordinary it has to pass beyond the realm of possilbe coincidence- how many times can a thing constantly occur before coincidence cant be the explanation, because coincidences rarely exist as a general rule or fact- common occurences defeat the idea behind a coincidence… and even the literal defenition.

albert einsteins theory of relativity has proved a really odd thing in testing-

one partical of matter accelerated to a quarter the speed of light doubled in physical MASS but the DENSITY did not change at all- equating to the observation that if it could keep accelerating with no limitations it would eventually become larger than the universe itself.

albert failed math class and dropped out of school early.

open your eyes people who refuse to even be open minded to TESTING ideas- even if they sound crazy…

everyone knows there is an error in our mathematics…

we ARE missing something… some variable…

in a universe so big… it is impossible for anything to not be possible, and it is impossible for anything to Be possilbe…

grains of sand, universes in your hand, man… LOL

i am not crazy nor nuerotic enough to interpret something like this as an event in action as a result of my presence- nor am i crazy enough to deny physical reality…

all i can summarize is that this concept needs to be tested, and tested properly- since it has not been, it is pretty much arrogant to decide or assume that the whole idea is “a crock”

ok so after 2 posts, related posts pop up? autonomic or manual? either way COOL thanks to whomever deserves it…

after reading more i want to say something else-

although i have… contemplated this streetlight thing very extensivly, especialy the question if I had something to do with it… my conclusion has never been that i have some special power… thats just stupid… 99% of all “magic” so far has been proven through science… not to mention several “biblical miracles” although i am not touching that subject lol.

my conclusion IS that some humans effect street lights.
some dont.

for some reason beyond my grasp, the majority sum this up as a “crock”-

what confuses me is… the obvious logic-

its is folly for one to decide this does happen as a result of peoples presence…
it is folly for one to decide this does NOT happen as a result of peoples presence…
i have only my own data to go own, which in my oh so humble opinion, doesnt lean so much toward ME that is effecting the lights but towards the Possibility that
certain people, including myself MAY have this… anomaly.
it has not been tested properly though, so my own conclusion is regrettably summarized easily into speculation.

i am still undecided… but at the same time i know i am not insane and i also know this happens way to often…

im gonna go learn everything aboput these lights…
then i wanna check up on the electromagnetic chemicals inside of us.

perhaps a common denominator BESIDES some mental… “quirk” or “defect” however you see it… is there… something physical…

i will be back with a more educated statement

(i still think it is wrong to judge one way or the other, until the scientific method or research has been applied by a reliable source, and even then if new ideas werent at least Tested in that research i would still be unable to conclude)

searching my brain deeply for more info… and more clarity on why i am conviced people can effect streetlights flickering/switching off/on just by bodily presence-

in 3 different places i have lived there have been certain orange street lights that went off everytime i walked by them.

i hate that it may be percieved as wishful thinking or fabrication-

the root is fear.

it scared me.
scared some of my friends.
downright wierd to the point that it truly freaked me out.

this is where my interest and insistence that research will proove that human bodys can effect streetlights- and beyond that many objects that run on small amounts of electricity-

then again i believe only on intuition(?) or even call it a hunch… that there are more than 3 dimensions…

as far as physical reality is concerned, after reading some layman physics…

shit… we know nothing.

This is a bit unusual, but here goes… I have noticed this for years, whenever I walk under a street lamp they flicker and go out. This happens about 40% of the time but usually when I am alone or with only one other person. Any idea how or why this happens? Or do have some sort of weird electromagnetic aura?

Thanks,
Nicholas

Ok so I could have versed it better, this phenomenon only happens when I am with fewer than 3 other people but definatly more frequently when I am alone. It’s definatly sporatic but has happened to as many as 50% of the street lamps on a typical evening journey home.

I was more wondering if there is some sort of sensor imbeded in the pavment… the electromagnetic thing was ment as a joke.

For over three years in the early '90s I lived in the downtown section of a city, and there was this one street light that was “my” street light–when I got close to it, it went out. I walked by this light more than a hundred times after dark, I would estimate, and it went out every single time. I tried using the other side of the street–it didn’t matter. I’d get close and stop, trying to wait it out–no dice; it waited 'til I gave up and started walking again, and when I was in range it went out. I didn’t often drive by this light because of the street set-up, but the times I did after dark it went out. This went on until I moved away.

Now I’ve had other street lights go off when I was under them, and I’m sure you and Cecil between you are right about the phenomena in general. But this one single street light acted this way for me every time, and I find that to be a hell of a coincidence.

Or maybe it was my magnetic personality.

Thats EXACTLY what happened to me, with several different streetlights, located in different locations…

Weird effect on lights sometimes – anyone else?

I’ve noticed this odd little phenomenon for a while, but it’s picked up a bit lately, and it confuses me.

This is a thing that I’ve always heard referred to as the (very un-PC) “rape-me light” effect. It’s the phenomenon by which a streetlamp or other light simply… goes out… as you pass by it. (Hence the term “rape-me lights”) I seem to have this effect on a lot of lights. There’s a streetlight on campus that goes off pretty much every time I walk past it, and occasionally if it’s already off it’ll turn on. I’ve watched it, and it doesn’t seem to do this for other people. One of the lights that illuminates the front of the library building has gone off three times as I passed it, as well as two other streetlamps at various times, and one of the overhead lightbulbs in a practice-room hallway in the music building actually exploded as I walked underneath it. (Luckily was enclosed in a plastic covering.)

I don’t get it. Do I have some weird electrical field that screws with lightbulbs? Is it all a big coincidence? Has anyone else observed this? Share!

Another! I KNEW IT WASNT JUST ME!

Dear Cecil,
Know that you have enlightened the multitudes as to how lights flicker off and on mysteryously, I will do my part. Having spent eight years as an electrician I can tell you that the most common reason for a sodium lamp to suddenly go out for a moment and come back on is as your source from G.E. indicates, due to voltage. A change in voltage, or a voltage drop. When the intinsity of the energy is interupted the lamp will cycle. Now what you didn’t know or just didn’t print, The most common cause of these voltage drops are from the starting of a/c compressors, electric dryers, and other high energy consuming appliances. This phenomenon is more common near homes where aluminum conductors feed electricity to the homes. This is due to the tendancy of aluminum to corrode more than copper. Also loose wiring contributes much as corrosion by causing more resistance and thereby increasing voltage drops. If you are lucky enough to have a street light in your yard try switching your a/c on and off and see for your self. This may not work in all instances due to which circuits feed the light and the a/c.
Thanks for the opportunity to share this.

Due to some faulty wiring and short-sighted administration, there actually were a few lights at Villanova University which would go out when folks walked under them (this was several years ago when I was there; the situation may have since been fixed). Somewhere along the line, the administration had decided that the footpaths on campus could somehow be rendered more safe if they installed some nice bright lights to cast shadows for people to hide in. But it would be wasteful to keep the lights on all the time, since there were few folks out and about at night. So they had motion sensors, to only turn on when the paths were in use.

Except that the switched got reversed on several of the lights, so that they turned off whenever a person walked past, and were on otherwise.

I live in a suburb of Chicago. There is a street light on my corner that I can make go on and off at my will.

Of course, it helps if I time my will to coincide with the changing of a stop light three blocks away. It seems some electrical leads got crossed and the street light shorts out the lamp post.

I won’t tell, if no one else does.

//@|b0Z|@, welcome to the Straight Dope Message Boards.

First, you only need to hit the SUBMIT REPLY button once. Hitting it again means that you double-post.

Second, you might want to take a look at the way that other threads work here, and the kinds of things people say, and the way they say them.

Your post is hard to read. Very hard to read. The combination of huge letters, a “leet” screen name, and a long rambling incoherent post all combine to create a very negative impression for most posters here. They think you’re probably about eight or ten years old. Thus, I’m not surprised that 6 of the 7 posts in this thread are from you, talking to yourself.

If you want to practice the codes for different sized letters, please do it in a “test” thread in the forum called “About This Message Board.”

This is intended as a Message Board for mature discussion amongst adults. I’m sure you’re capable of that, but your first posts haven’t demonstrated it, and that’s the main reason you’re not getting any replies. Plus, this topic has already been discussed in the threads that Nightwatch gave you links to, so that’s another reason you’re not getting replies.
