Can someone help identify/name this Indian foodstuff?

You know when you go to some Indian restaurants they will give you a bowl after your meal filled with fennel seeds, or candied fennel seeds?

Well, this was kind of like that, but not really. It comes in little foil bags and contains fennel seeds and candy coated seeds but also a few other things - what I remember most were the tiny little red sticks that I could never figure out.

This was sweet and flavourful and I loved having a packet before work.

I also could get other packets in the same area of the Indian grocery which would have large sugar crystals and almonds in them, and I would like to find out what that was too.

Anyone know?

The stuff in the bowl is mukhwas–breath freshener for after meals. The packages sound like just a snack version.

Its known as Saunf and it is sugar coated fennel.

Ironically regular fennel is also known as Sanuf.

It’s not just fennel - I can get candy coated fennel anywhere. This had other bits in it as well, the red sticks and sometimes nuts I mentioned earlier.

I knew everyone would just respond “candy coated fennel.” This is different. Thank you, but that’s not very helpful.

Finnally found it, if anyone’s interested:

you realize the stuff has betel in it?

Not that I have any issue with mild stimulants … I have been known to chew it upon occasion myself [I like the rose flavored stuff, personally but not many anglos like flowery flavors.]

Hmm. I’d try some if the minimum order wasn’t sixty thousand boxes…

Yeah, I was pretty sure there was betel in it, although that page confirmed it.

I don’t drink coffee and I don’t smoke so I’m not too concerned. The most I drink is a cup of tea once in a while.

I can’t seem to find the stuff in the UK…now that I’ve found it, doesn’t look like I can get it :frowning:
