I recently upgaraded a machine I was running 98 on, and the modem immediately stopped working. Any ideas?
Particulars: I originally bought the machine with Linux software, then changed it over to Windows when I realized I needed a second computer for everone’s use.
I would suggest checking the device manager (R-Click “My Computer”, Properties, Hardware…) to see if the modem is being recognized properly by XP. If not, you might see an exclamation point or a question mark or something next to your modem listing.
You may need to reinstall/update the drivers for your modem. Find out the brand and the model and then go to the company website and download the XP drivers.
This would be my first suggestion, although you may have already tried this.
Windows XP can’t use winmodems, which unfortuantely account for a mojority of all modems out there. You need a non-winmodem, slightly more expensive. That would be my guess. First I would check with the manufacturer of your current modem to see if it is compatible with XP. Who knows, maybe just a new driver?
I would not be suprised that, of all the modems out there that are compatible with win95/98/ME and not compatible with winXP, the majority (and probably all of them) are winmodems.
OK, I tried doing some research to back my claim, but I couldn’t find any definite answer. I did see a couple of instances where winmodems were supported, but very few.
Winmodems will work with XP but older ones need XP drivers because their DOS based. If your PC had Linux originally it is probably not a winmodem. Do you have a brand name or some kind of identifier? External modems are a bit more expensive but they work with anything.
[hijack]Grrr! I just today had to reinstall WinXP on my main machine. I shut it down last Thursday night, and on Friday morning it wouldn’t boot up. After pouring through the MS website, it appears that my registry got corrupted. I tried a different article on using the recovery console, and that looked promising, then it hung up on the reboot. Back to recovery console again to disable the AGP44 service that it was hanging on, only to discover I now couldn’t get past the admin password it was asking me for. It wasn’t like I changed it or anything. I actually called MS on this one, and they basically said that sometimes XP will put in its own admin password. WTF? He said my only option was to reinstall the OS. We tried to do a recovery install, but no dice. ~sigh~ You are now free to go back to the regularly scheduled topic. [/hijack]
