Can someone tell me what is going on in this song?

…specifically with this:

When was this made? And above all, why?

-Ulterior

I would say it was made in the late 60’s or early 70’s, and that should also answer why it was made–it was the 60’s. 'Nuf said.

I love that song! I have an mp3 of it… I never dreamed there was a video! Oh rapture and joy!!!
(what do those circles say, btw? “??? Leonard Nimoy”

Did anyone else have a hard time understanding most of the words?

The song is from the 1968 album The Two Sides of Leonard Nimoy. Note in the music video that Nimoy has the pointed sideburns he and the other male cast members were required to wear on Star Trek.

Other songs on that album include “If I Were A Carpenter” and “Gentle On My Mind”. Nimoy recorded a number of song albums, BTW.

The circles say “What’s a HOBBIT?”, “What’s a LEONARD NIMOY?”, “Frodo LIVES”, “Hobbits UNITE”, and “Appoint LEONARD NIMOY to the U.N.”

Correction: “Admit LEONARD NIMOY to the U.N.”

Historical context: From 1965 to 1971, the U.N. voted on several proposals on whether to admit the People’s Republic of China to the U.N. General Assembly, in place of The Republic of China (Taiwan).

Historical context on the song: The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings were first published in an authorized paperback in the U.S. in 1965, and became bestsellers, especially among the college crowd. At the time, those works had fallen out of copyright in the U.S. and were in the public domain, so a person could write a “tribute” song to Bilbo Baggins without fearing copyright infringement. (In 1994, copyright was automatically restored in certain foreign works that were then in the public domain in the United States but were protected by copyright or neighboring rights in the source country.)

Remember the spores that turned the crew of the Enterprise into insane space hippies? Just call it method acting… and rest assured that there are probably other fan-written songs that are much worse…

I just realized the only proper response to this is to say “Its most illogical, captain” and wonder how Nimoy has any dignity left. Heck, i’ve heard 60’s songs and seen music videos much better then this… this is just stupid…

Thanks, I’ve been looking for that link!

Actually, Leonard Nimoy has a song called “Highly Illogical”

(StrongBad voice on)…That…is the coolest thing EVER…(StrongBad voice off)

As cool as that may be, can you imagine how unstopppable that song would be if Leonard Nimoy ate more salsa?

Leonard Nimoy also went out on tour to promote the LP, visiting various radio stations around the country, including KHJ in Los Angeles and KYA in San Francisco:

Welcome to the Straight Dope Message Boards, Bay Radio, we’re glad to have you here.

Normally, we don’t like bringing up old threads, and this one is over two years old. You are certainly adding new information, which is the only excuse for reviving old threads, but the tour was finished two years ago… so who cares?

Anyhow, no big deal, and, as I say, welcome!

I remember that album; my brother and I wanted it because we loved “Star Trek” (well, I was 7 in 1968). We played it a lot, and now I really feel sorry for my parents.

Moderator comments: Ulterior, I have modified the thread title, since your title didn’t tell folks whether they were interested or could be helpful. We have lots of threads, and most people don’t read 'em all, so the thread title should help folks decide and be a positive guide/influence.

Note Forum Rules post #2.

No biggie, you’ll know for next time.
