I’d rate The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress as Heinlein’s best novel. It’s lean and fast-paced, and the characters and the situation are perfect. It’s got enough of Heinlein’s philosophy so you know where he’s coming from, but it’s in there in a natural way, and doesn’t try to take over the book.
Tris is right: it’s the quintessential Heinlein novel. If you’re going to read just one Heinlein book, read this one.
cj - try used bookstores, seriously. At one point, I had multiple copies of the book (apparently I’ve given the extras away, which is what they were there for), and I know I bought the extras at used bookstores.
Fenris, yer killing me here. Don’t make me put a rip in your P-suit.
I loved this book. As a matter of fact, I had the opportunity to read the thing on an exercise on my down time. The damn thing left me cold and alone at the very end when Mike “died”. Of course, I couldn’t help but sense an impending doom when I saw XXXMYCROFTXXX. I swear I was seeing “Micro$oft” every time, kinda like we all know Anakin’s gonna turn into Vader.

Um, Tripler, the thread was started by somebody that hadn’t read the book yet.
Would it be trespassing too much on the indulgence of Mods to suggest that they edit Tripler’s post to put the last three sentences of his second paragraph inside a spoiler tag?
I’ve just sent an e-mail to the mods.
My deepest apologies. Hopefully they can correct things.

I love The Moon is a Harsh Mistriss. Also Emergence. I keep hoping for an Emergence sequel.
