Can someone with Tourettes drive?

You DO realize that Tourette’s Syndrome is a neurological disorder, right?

I didn’t mean to say that it wasn’t neurological. Just that it is a bit different from other neurological disorders in that tics are affected by one’s affective state.

I know that I have a couple of tics that are elicited by certain thoughts. I don’t think Parkinson’s has this feature, though I wouldn’t be surprised if Huntington’s does to some small degree.

I’ve read things written by people with Tourette’s and they make it sound a lot like trying to resist the type of impulses that go along with both ADHD and OCD - they can be repressed at least for a while, but it’s psychologically uncomfortable and eventually you more or less have to give into them. That makes sense considering a lot of scientists think there’s a common root cause to all three disorders (and schizophrenia too).

As for the OP, the one person I know for sure who has Tourette’s drives.

It’s more like trying to not cough when you have a tickle in your throat. You can do it for a while, sure, but eventually you have to cough. It becomes physically unbearable not to. Also, in my experience, resistance makes ticing worse when you do give in.

I have Tourette’s and I drive just fine. Like most folks with TS my tics are relatively minor.
