Can split Proscar (not Propecia) tablets be safely ingested?

Measured in terms of unit cost, a 5-mg tab of Proscar is much less costly than a 1-mg. tab of Propecia, the latter drug prescribed for treatment of male pattern baldness.

My question: is ingesting split Proscar tablets safe? I know some drugs need to be broken down inside the gut, though I’m thinking Proscar doesn’t.

Also: do pill splitters tend to provide better results than a knife?

What’s the general rule of thumb re: which split meds can be safely ingested?

The short answer is yes. Many baldness sufferers go this route because of the hugely reduced costs.

If you read many of the baldness web forums or the USENET forums you will see most men who are taking finasteride will buy proscar instead.

Some have even convinced their doctors to prescribe it in lieu of propecia.

From what I’ve read the difference between pill splitters and using a knife is negligible.

An exacto knife will work fine.

I appreciate the responses and I’m also hoping for some feedback by a physician. Thanks!

Don’t know if this helps but I remember reading that proscar in the US comes in a triangular form to discourage splitting it up into 4 1.25mg doses, whereas (I’ve seen advertised) that the stuff made in Brazil is round and much easier to split.
