Can the Media Start A Recession?

I was watching the news last night and they started a economy report. Car sales were down compared to the same month last year, housing starts slow again this month, Nasdaq is down 49% year to date, unemployment is up again this month and on and on and on. I wanted to jump off my roof(probably just sprang an ankle one story).

Anyway, I think they would have depressed anybody watching. If I planning on buying a car the next day, I probably would have rethought it after seeing that report.

Why would the media do such extensive negative story(ies) knowing that they could actually make it worse? I mean don’t they want the economy to be good so they can sell more spots?

Of course they can! Things are getting too good for the nation, and a lack of disasters is bad for news, so they need to lower the publics confidence in the economy. It crashes, more good stuff to report!
You can work in more conspiracy if you like.

WB, I may be wrong, but I think you’ve mentioned the term “liberal media” before. If that’s correct (and I’m going from a general impression of your posts, not a search), then on the one hand you gripe about the media being an advocate, hiding facts on one party and exposing the other, and usually being biased. On the OP hand, you gripe that they’re reporting the facts whether said facts effect advertising sales, Clinton’s legacy from the economy, car sales, etc. Which do you want? Unbiased reporting or biased stories? And if the latter, why can’t CNN be liberally biased and Fox (and damn near all of talk radio) be conservative? Or are you just asking for everyone to agree with your opinions of what’s good, bad, and news?

If WB hasn’t ever said “liberal media,” then I wish to apply this post to anyone who has.

Thanks, and we now return you to your regularly scheduled coverage of elections, one-trick ponies, and general BS.
P.S., I hope this isn’t a double post, but I had one more thought so I hit stop: if car sales are down and I were going to buy a car tomorrow, I’d be happy. If the supply is there and the demand is down, I’m getting a better price.

The Media “declares” a recession - Usually when people can’t afford to buy their third DVD player.
