She has narcolepsy, which doesn’t just mean falling asleep at unpredictable times. It means the part of the brain that controls sleeping and waking doesn’t function correctly, so she must wake up on her own every time. She can’t be woken up.

It’s worth noting that it wasn’t JUST when she was asleep. She developed narcolepsy some time during their marriage, but the rape and abuse took place when she was wide awake as well.
