Why would you need to? Unless the accusation came from a mod, in which case I would expect it to be carried on via e-mail or PM.
That’s part of the objection to using “troll” as an insult. If you actually think he is a troll, the mods should be notified. If not, then “troll” is merely what it has become on the SDMB - “we have tried everything, and you won’t back down and let us have the last word”. No defense against that is either necessary or possible.
Your idea of a voluntary cutback in insults is a good one. Unfortunately as impractical as such things often are. Some Dopers aren’t ever going to change. They get too much of a charge out of bullying. (Not that I am never one of those.)
But then the same strategy will have to be applied as now - ignore the insults as much as necessary for one’s peace of mind. Maybe poke at them and get them to roar, laugh at the results, and move on.
Having been the fortunate recipient of some of your creative invective, I know you can do better than “jerk”.
Well, that I agree with, and I hope the OP is not trying to eliminate the Pit or clean up the Pit (unless he’s volunteering for sweeping duty). I think, though, that the OP’s comment might go along with the thread GFactor has posted in the Pit about what should go there. Too many threads where people are just saying that X is a troll would be pretty boring, so maybe eliminating the word troll would force people to think up more descriptive terms. But I also don’t have anything against the word troll by itself. It’s just sometimes used as a catch-all term.
The mods agree, and that’s why the ban on “troll” accusations was lifted. It’s sort of, there are two accusations of trolling: Troll[sub]1[/sub] is someone who is being so much a nuisance that mods should be notified (via the Report function, li’l ! in red triangle in upper right of post) and that official action may be needed. Troll[sub]2[/sub] is just a word used as an insult (I like Shodan’s “someone trying to have the last word.”)
Once, long ago, we didn’t make that troll[sub]1[/sub] and troll[sub]2[/sub] distinction, and so we didn’t want people using an insult that could be viewed as a Warning. Kind of like accusations of spam – that’s an accusation that mods are expected to react to. (Yes, we react faster and more surely if there’s a report.)
We’ve now made the distinction (although usually the subscripts are omitted, and it’s obvious) and allow the use of troll[sub]2[/sub] as just another insult.
Of course, you can put whatever you want on your own websites or blogs. That’s never been even remotely a question. It’s not what you put on your own website, it’s what you put HERE that we care about.
You can make reference to your own websites or blogs on the SDMB, IF (Please not qualifying IF) you ask permission in advance, and IF that’s not the ONLY reason you’re here. If the only reason you come to the SDMB is to advertise for your own website, blog, commercial enterprise, etc. then NO. That’s basically what Lynn got him for.
Does that clarify, MeanOldLady?
And, Shodan, I always thought it was vox populi, vox Dex – I think you’re using the ablative imperfect rather than the pluperfect.
