Can WiFi affect a remote controlled fireplace?

I just got an interesting call from my father-in-law. He just decided to (finally) get rid of dial-up and had Comcast install a cable modem that has a wireless router built in to it at his house - they didn’t give him a choice with this, that’s just the equipment they brought.

As soon as the installer got the modem up and running, my FIL started hearing a ticking sound. He asked the installer, who said he couldn’t hear anything.

This was installed two days ago. Today, my FIL tried to use his remote to turn on his fireplace. The remote was blinking and wouldn’t turn on the fireplace. I asked him if he’s replaced the batteries in the remote yet, and he has not. He said that he will, but he does not think that is the issue because the fireplace won’t turn on using the manual controls either.

I’m 2100 miles away from his house, so I can’t just go and try to troubleshoot it. I also haven’t been a cable installer in nearly 5 years, so the equipment is a bit more evolved now than what I worked with.

What could be causing the WiFi and the fireplace to fight with each other like this? How can we solve it?

Or, it was the batteries. Reported to be closed.

And I was about to ask if it was a 2.4Ghz fireplace.
