Can you get beef patties at your local pizzeria?

I didn’t vote. I’m just posting to ask, "Why the hell would you ask for a hamburger at a pizzaria?

I voted yes before reading the OP, because our local pizzeria has the best cheeseburger grinders. I wasn’t aware of the specialized meaning of “beef patties”.

I was very suspicious of them when I first moved to the city – they don’t have them in pizza places in western New York. But then, I was also confused upon realizing that NYC pizza places don’t have chicken wings, because every mom and pop pizza place in western New York offers a pizza and wings combo.

I’ve never heard of them, but they seem to violate my First Rule of pizzerias - “Never buy pizza from a plce that sells anything other than pizza”.

Yep. As a Canuck this makes sense to me.

Mom and Pop places offer burgers, fries, wings and stuff, but not Jamaican Patties and although I’ve seen these things as a frozen food item in supermarkets, I’ve never heard of them in pizza joints.

Never heard of them. But now I’m hungry. Doesn’t look like you can get them in San Francisco, which is where I explore most foreign cuisines because that’s where I spend most of my time away from home. I’ve always loved meat pasties, so I think I’m going to try to make some Jamaican patties myself.

I have to vote no, now that I’ve moved. But I could have easily gotten one any time at the local pizzeria in the Albany area and even could have bought a whole box of the things at the grocery store.

No. I’ve heard of them, being culinarily curious, but never had one. I’m sure you can find one somewhere in Chicago, but it’s not something a pizza place would carry. Hell, in all the times I’ve been to New York, nobody’s ever mentioned them to me, the bastards! (As that is something I would totally order.)

I posted from my position as a professional cook, remembering assholes who come into wherever I’m cooking and try to order shit that isn’t on the fucking menu.

Look, asshole, here is the menu. We have stuff in stock to prepare the items that are on that fucking menu. So don’t come in here, remembering something that you ordered at some fancy-ass restaurant, and expect me to reproduce that thing, but cheaper.

You don’t go to the local Ford dealership and ask them to sell you a new Chevrolet. You don’t go to McDonald’s and ask them to sell you a pizza. So why the fuck do you come into my down-home diner, serving “traditional” American breakfast and lunch, and try to get fucking Beef Wellington out of me? I CAN COOK FUCKING BEEF WELLINGTON, BUT NOT FUCKING HERE, BECAUSE I DON’T HAVE THE SHIT TO MAKE IT WITH!

I’ve occasionally seen Jamaican patties sold in corner stores in Ontario as well, but not in a pizza place. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a pizza place in a Caribbean neighbourhood, though.

EDIT: I was also slightly confused by the thread title; I’ve only ever heard them called “Jamaican patties”, not “beef patties” or “Jamaican beef patties”.

I’ve eaten a few patties, but otherwise agree. Once a place takes its eye off the goal of a perfect pizza, their pizza goes off the rails.

Not even a salad or other “Italian” fare, like pasta or cheesesticks? Because I don’t think I’ve ever seen a pizza place without one or both.

Most of the 7 Elevens around here sell Jamaican beef patties. Not a good version of them though.

I can’t speak for Alessan, but my personal measure is limited to stuff that’s involving standard pizza ingredients, with the addition of greens and bread. Salads and subs are still allowed.

However, cheesestick is a vague term. If you’re meaning crust with just cheese and garlic: of course that’s allowed. If you’re meaning breaded, deep fried mozzarella, I’m starting to be suspicious that this pizza may not be great. It may be acceptable, but it’s probably not going to be a pizza I’m willing to drive across town for.

Wow, one of the best things of Michigan (a pasty) pidgined into Jamaican “patty” with Scotch bonnet chiles and Indian spices sounds like something I’d eat up if I’ve known they existed. The article makes me think it’s a pasty, samosa, empanada, and source of delicious fire all combined into one.

I would never, ever, think that such a concoction exist at a pizzeria, though. Is this the standard channel of distribution, or just a common one? I’m going to be in Michigan, Nevada, and California the next few weeks, ignoring my low-carb diet for worthwhile endeavors, and would love to get expose my sense of taste to one.

If you followed this rule in NYC, there would be precious few pizzerias you could chose from.

Even if they’re more prevalent on the east coast of the US, I found it difficult to believe that they wouldn’t be available in the SF bay area.

Come to think of it, I think I’ve heard of pizza places in Toronto that also serve roti, but I’m coming up blank on pizza places that serve Jamaican patties.

Huh. I live in NYC and I honestly had no idea what the thread title was about either. I too thought it meant a hamburger.

Grew up in southern CA, have lived in the Pacific Northwest for the past decade. I’ve never heard of this dish before, let alone seen it on a pizzeria menu.

If you showed me one devoid of context, I’d probably have called it an empanada rather than a “patty”.

However, now that I’ve learned of it, I desire one and shall seek out a recipe forthwith.
