on rereading, I get that it’s a NYC thing. Still weird
Never heard of it.
I’m from MD, where there were non-chain pizza places serving “New York Pizza” as the default style. I live in Ohio, where I have to go to a place with “New York Pizza” somewhere in the name to get anything resembling pizza. Never heard of “beef patty.” After pizza, I would probably expect a place to have: calzones, subs, salads, fried apps, pastas, burgers- in descending order of likelihood.
That’s definitely not a thing here in Cleveland, but we have a tiny Jamaican expat population. Doesn’t surprise me at all for NYC, an interesting mix of food/culture but I’m sure there is a burroughs immigration history that explains it. One city I do spend a lot of time in where Jamaican beef patties seem ubiquitous is Toronto, they are everywhere there.
Everywhere in the world except Indiana:
*Customer: “I’d like the pork tenderloin”
*Server: Brings the customer a pork tenderloin instead of a deep-fried breaded manhole cover on a bun.

Very true, except in Indiana we don’t have to specify Pork… you just order a tenderloin. Some trendy places may ask if you want it grilled or fried… if they do, leave and go somewhere that knows they are supposed to be breaded and fried only.
Nope. Not Jamaican, a normal burger or anything else. And my reason for answering was the other day when I was picking up my order, someone was loudly demanding a burger as part of their rather large order. So the owner/cook smacked a couple meatballs (sauce and all) with a pan, scraped them onto a bun, and said “Here’s your freaking burger, moron”.
One of the many reasons I love that place.
Oh, yeah. I forgot about those kinds of cheesesticks. I meant the kind that’s kinda a pizza without the sauce. But, yeah, what you describe sounds like my favorite pizza place–though I’m not sure if they do sandwiches.
Definitely no patties at the local pizza places. But they do have conch fritters as an appetizer. Welcome the the Caribbean.
But you can have your choices of patties at many corner shops and gas stations. Freshly made daily and delivered by a local company. Beef, Chicken, Cheese, and sometimes Veggie. You are expected to know how each is marked according to flavour.
So the pizza places make two different types of dough daily?
I’ve never heard of one. I think, if you ordered one at a pizza place, you’d be greeted by a confused stare. Apparently, I can get them at the local Jamaican restaurant (that I’ve walked by many times but never actually gone to).
Must be a city thing. I live barely 25 miles east of NYC, and we don’t have them here. I know what Jamaican beef patties are (though no one I know calls them just “beef patties”), but I’ve never seen them in a pizzeria.
I’d be surprised to find a pizzaria (or anything other than a dedicated Caribbean restaurant) making them fresh, rather than buying bulk boxes of frozen ones.
Just had my first beef patty today thanks to this thread. I had to go to a Jamaican restaurant to get one. Not bad with a little habanero sauce dabbed on top.
There was a good hot dog stand in my mall that had those, but they were called something else…can’t remember what, and can’t check because they went out of business. Tried one once and wasn’t overly thrilled, but figured it was just because he didn’t sell many and maybe they’d been sitting around a while.
There are good and bad ones. The ones at 7-Eleven that I mentioned above are pretty damn terrible.
