Can you go to sleep with your TV on?

I can fall asleep in the lounge, but always wake later and go to bed.

I have a TV in my room, but haven’t gone to sleep with it on. The noise, or the flickering of the light will not let me sleep.

How about you?

I can’t, even if the sound is muted. The electronic hum drives me insane. I’m not sure why I’m so sensitive to that hum.

I have fallen asleep while watching TV. Usually I don’t, but sometimes, narcolepsy-like somnolence overcomes me and I just cannot stay awake, even if I want to. I don’t know what that’s all about.

No way, Jose. That flickering light makes me nuts - it gives me a horrible headache as well. It’s one of those things that my husband and I fight about - he has to have it on, so I sleep on the couch. If I wait to go to bed till he’s asleep and then turn it off, I’m ok. But he wakes up in the middle of the night and turns it on - which wakes me up and then he gets mad at me because I tell him to turn it off so I can go back to sleep.

Yep

It’s the ONLY way I can fall asleep anymore. I wake up when my husband turns it off.

sure. i have sleep timer, so I set it to 30 minutes, and close my eyes go to sleep with it on, usually listening to the news/weather/sports or sometimes whatever it is I’m watching on pbs. I’m usually asleep within 5 minutes anyway.

Sucks though if i forget to hit that timer button, and I wake up at 1am and some crap is on.

Then again, the tv in my bedroom now only has sound, no picture–so it’s easier for me than most of you. But even when the picture worked, it was not a problem at all.

I probably don’t have to have the TV on to fall asleep, but I always do.

Yes, I can, but it gives me really fucked up dreams. Hitler Channel + sleep = really messed up dreams for Slortar.

Yes. I find it disconcerting to go to sleep with it off. Sometimes I set the timer so that it changes channels throughout the night in case I wake up. A little Letterman, a late, late Conan re-run and then my preferred local news at 5 am. I’m never up for any of that, but, you know, just in case.

There’s a Hitler Channel?

Unplugged?

Same with me; the TV has great influence over my dreams. I can turn an episode of Sesame Street into the most bizarre, psychedelic type dream.

Aside from that though, I can sleep with the TV on, the radio on, the lights on, the jackhammer on… The alarm clock on…

I could sleep through a nuclear blast, so something as minor as a television playing doesn’t phase me in the slightest.

Nor does it faze me :smack:

I have a difficult time falling asleep without it on. It started when I was in college and went through an insomnia stage. I found that having the TV on helped me to take my mind off everything that was racing through my head and keeping me awake. My little trick is to make myself close my eyes during the commercials. Eventually they just don’t open back up again. Most of the time I watch The Daily Show and I’m asleep by the time the guest comes on.

Yep. It’s the one with the H in the bottom right corner that seems to show nothing but old Nazi propaganda films.

I have the tv on most nights. I don’t think I need it, really, and I’m not even looking at it. I’m listening to it, and I will usually put in the same movie every night for a week or more (usually an MST3K episode), fall asleep in the first 20 minutes, and wake up at 2 a.m. to shut it all off.

Argh, damn hamsters got hungry and et my post.

Anyway, to be fair, they do go on the occasional Mysteries of the Pyramids jag.

(And da, in case we’re being too obscure, yes, it’s the History Channel).

Usually when I do nap in front of the tv and want to leave it on, these days I have enough sense to switch it to something innocuous, like the Food Network. Worst case scenario, I have dreams about Rachel Ray pestering me about EVOO.

I have a TV in my bedroom for the first time in years. I was worried that I would stay up watching TV when I should be asleep. That hasn’t been an issue yet, although I do occasionly wake up at 2:30 with the TV still on because I shut off the Sat reciever but not the TV whilst in a hypnogogic trance.

A reference to The History Channel.

At least a pic of Nazis shows up every thirty minutes or so.

It depends. I can’t usually fall asleep with the TV on at night unless I’m extremely sleepy. If the sound is low enough, I can sleep with the TV on during the day because the light doesn’t bother me as much. My problem is that once the TV’s on, I concentrate on paying attention to the show. I have the same problem with music- I can’t fall asleep to it if it’s loud enough for me to be able to focus on the lyrics.
