“We had to tilt his head back to get the crack out of his nose.”

“We had to tilt his head back to get the crack out of his nose.”
Okay, a hint then. It was said by a man in a uniform.
Was it on Cops perhaps? And they were doing what the sentence says they were?
Since you’ve asked for guesses and specified that it was on TV last night, I’ll submit that the “crack” was not the drug but a rift or split type of crack, with that further suggesting a metallic or stone head. Therefore a statue or the like. The “uniform” clue’s wording suggests a red herring type of thing so I’ll go as far afield as I can and recommend a scout master or an usher or somebody whose uniform has nothing to do with law enforcement or the military.
Getting warm, Zeldar. The uniformed man was a park ranger.
Were they working with a tranquilized bear?
Nope. He was being interviewed where he works — at Mt. Rushmore.
So was the nose on one of the actual stone faces? Or a replica? Some souvenir shop mock-up maybe? If it matters, I didn’t see this on TV. Just guessing.
Okay, you’re actually pretty close, so I’ll just spill it. You and Phlosphr were the only ones interested anyway…
The ranger noted that Thomas Jefferson was looking upward over George Washington, and said that a stone cracked right at Jefferson’s nose while he was being formed. Then added, “We had to tilt his head back to get the crack out of his nose.”
It struck me as a pretty interesting thing to say, especially lifted from context. And I thought it would make a cool sort of un-Googlable riddle.
Thanks. It was fun to guess, and you’re right about it being hard to Google for.
One of those fun little 3-man threads, I suppose…
Could it have something to do with the Cheez-It 700-pound cheddar Mount Rushmore?
I know that Stephen Colbert mentioned something built inside Teddy Roosevelt’s nose in Mount Rushmore but darned if I can remember what.
Three men and a little lady. A little lady a little slow on the uptake.
I had a sneaky feeling that if I said something snotty somebody else would post to keep it from being a 3-way. I just didn’t expect it to be you!
I was busy composing and didn’t even see that it had been settled. :smack: No wiseassness intended.
FWIW, whether Liberal meant your story or not, I must admit that the cheese thing makes more sense for the “crack in the nose” part. But I still don’t know if the crack was in the actual statue/carving or some mock-up version.
Your story made me think how neat it would be to make an ice sculpture of some scene where fire or Hell was involved. Then I had the thought to start a thread on unlikely inspirations for art in general. Stuff like 3D movies for blind people. But I decided not to pursue it.
I haven’t read any replies and my guess is a comment from an episode of Cops about hidden drugs.
The actual.

BoBettie: No, but it does sound like it.
Good. Since I didn’t see this on TV, was it meant to be a reenactment of the original carving or some repair work done more recently? How did the ranger’s role fit in to the stonework?
Intriguing thread…
It happened in the original carving. Jefferson was peering straight out just like Washington. But after the crack recovery, Jefferson was looking upward, head tilted back. The Ranger was just talking to the camera, explaining some of the history of the monument.
I don’t get it.
There was a crack in Jefferson’s nose, which caused his entire head to tilt back? Or was the entire head carved again because of the flaw?
