Can you make it better and cheaper at home?

Homemade mayo does taste different, absolutely. But I actually prefer commercial mayo for most things I normally use mayo for.

Preserved lemons. Hellishly expensive to buy in the supermarket, but if you have a lemon tree, ridiculously easy to make: jar, lemons, salt, time. And the lime tree I planted four or five years back is really starting to fruit heavily now, so I’m going to try making preserved limes this year.

I was thinking about this thread’s concept today as I was considering going to the music store to look for sheet music to play. I was wondering if I could just write my own music instead, and play that - it would be less expensive than buying music at the store, though it’d be a matter of opinion if my music is preferred to music written by others. Not to mention that writing my own music takes more time.

Window treatments. I could never afford custom window treatments, but I can make them.

And spaghetti sauce, but who has all day to hang out in the kitchen, slowly filling the house with wonderful aroma?

Pizza crust.

Not a whole pizza - might be cheaper, but likely not better.

But when you look at the store-bought premade crusts, and wanna have do-it-yourself pizza at home, you should make the crust yourself if you have the time. Store-bought is edible… though just, but homemade is much better.
