I have bathroom cabinet that i’d like to paint-can it be done? Is there any paint that will stick to formica? also: formica counter tops=- I swa a product used on TV that you can use to resurface a formica counter top-would this work? anyone have a good experience with this?
I once painted a piece of countertop laminate with Sears appliance paint without a primer, and much to my astonishment, it actually worked. I still have the piece ten years after the fact, and the stuff is still adhering.
Epoxy paints will adhere to baked enamel finishes (you can paint a bathtub with it), but I wouldn’t touch the stuff with a ten-foot pole, and have no experience with it.
Supposedly this stuff will stick to damn near anything, including unsanded wallboard and Melamine. Give it a shot on a test piece. Get the right stuff, though—I’m talking only about the stuff in the red can.
That BIN stuff sounds awesome, but what kind of paint/sealer would you use over it to protect the finish paint? I’m thinking, if you paint say, a bathroom vanity top, you’d need to protect it from water, soap, toothpaste, etc. (why yes, I do hate my bathroom vanity color).
I use Zinsser Bullseye a fair bit, which is good. I would recommend preparing the surface as well, if possible. This can be done with a sander or a chemical sander e.g. ESP. I would paint over with a gloss paint, that way there would be no need for varnish (I’ve heard there’s a risk of trapping moisture, which could promote mold/mildew growth in a high humidity area). Prep is a pain and my least favourite job, but those items I have taken the time to prepare have lasted well.
My bathroom cupboard is looking as good as when it was first painted, about 7 years ago. I used a trade gloss rather than one from a DIY store - purely a coincidence at the time, but I liked it enough to go for trade gloss ever since. It’s a thinner consistency than that sold to DIY’ers and goes on beautifully (no brush marks). Use two coats and there’s no need to varnish. This cupboard is in an uninsulated bathroom, so plenty of condensation, and is next to the bath, so gets splashed. It just needs a wipe over with a soft cloth.
