I know how to wrap a fish in tinfoil and bury it in hot ashes to cook it just like the Indians did
This is all very flattering, especially since I have not yet touched upon my skills at papermaking, leatherworking, animal husbandry (those two mean that not only can I ride horses, I can make the saddles and bridles to go with them), candle-making, open-fire cooking, and various other skills.
My main problem is that, since civilization IS still up and running, none of those will get me gainful employment now…
As a rule of thumb, red rocks tend to have iron, green ones copper. The downside that this isn’t 100% and ore quality is frequently poor.
Don’t worry about that. I have a cunning plan…
I can handle the blacksmithing, although sword making is one of the most difficult tasks in blacksmithing. I might be able to forge a plowshare though. As for smelting my own iron, I would have to dig around a little to remember the steps. I know how to make the required charcoal though. However, after the Apocalypse, wouldn’t we have old cars and such to plunder? I also know a thing or two about producing machine tools.
BTW, even sven, is that Peace Corps disc available to outsiders?
Thanks,
Rob
I can hoof it to M5, where the Mythbusters film. I’ll bring whatever I can to appease them and try to have them accept me, and hope that they do not betray and eat me.
sven, that disc would be cool.
Drawing from my fishing experience and a few episodes of those popular survival shows, I can probably catch some fish without any modern technology.
Well, this thread veered off in a very entertaining direction. One of the reasons I started it is that while I have read up on a lot of these skills I have tried my hand at almost none of them. I’ve made candles, I’ve started a fire from scratch, and I treated my own cold with dried herbs. Other than that, it’s all (educated) guesswork for me.
Broomstick, can I be your apprentice?
You know, a Ye Olde Timey Crafte of the Weeke thread MIGHT be interesting at that… Skills for the End of Days and all that
I was a weird obsessive kid who did stuff she read about in dusty old books. What can I say. Now I’m a weird not-so-obsessed adult with strange hobbies.
I was talking to my landlord today about this thread. He’s got several acres and metal smithing skills. Also lots of guns (hey, we live in Indiana). We’ve decided that come the end times I load up my pickup with every tool I can find in the place, canned food, bottled water, and head out to his place where we set up a survival community. And, oh yes, we kidnap his neighbor who is a vet* - vets can doctor people in a pinch as well as animals. We were getting quite crazy about the whole thing. Turns out he knew how to make soap from scratch, too.
- If you saw the DHC show with the vet who got bit by a poisonous snake and it was took windy to airlift him to where there was anti-venom so they put him in an ambulance and the anti-venom in an ambulance and aimed them at each other, meeting in the middle on the freeway to save his life - he’s that vet.
makes note to head for rural Indiana when the zombiepocalypse comes
Worm, you’re certainly welcome as it is my understanding you’ll need some boating skills to get to North America, after which you can put them to use on Lake Michigan. Unless you commandeer an airplane (I know Reykjavik has an airport, when I went to Europe we made a fueling stop). For small planes the suggested route is Iceland -> Greenland -> Newfoundland and then on into the interior.
Apprentices and want to be apprentice applications will be accepted. In the event of Armageddon please apply in person as I expect my e-mail will be of questionable reliability.
Those who show up with tools, canned goods, seeds, livestock, books, or medical supplies will be especially welcomed.
So what else do we need?
We have sharp rocks, fire, swords, drinks, bread, soap and weapons to hunt with. Assuming we find a body of water, we’ll have some fish. And if we can capture some livestock we can breed them.
We’re off to a good start
