I know that there are some small companies and developers out there that can’t afford marketing campaigns like the names but still release their software on the internet for download - sometimes freeware and sometimes not. Has anyone here run into any absolutely awesome games of this nature? Preferably ones that are highly immersive and have at least a semblance of quality to them. Any suggestions?
Scorched Earth. VERY low-tech and, by today’s standards, absolutely horrible graphics. But I can’t stop playing it!
I don’t have time to dig up a link right now, but I imagine if you go to download.com and search for it you should find it.
snood. It is a “quickie” puzzle game. I think its at www.snood.com

Immediately after downloading Snood go on a BONZI BUDDY killing rampage. It’s piggy-backed on the file. That said, I love this game!
100% free high quality FPS using Unreal2 game engine.
If you like sports, try Out of the Park Baseball. Virtually no graphics, but excellent stat-based sim.
4 winds mah jong is a great mah jong game, a real mah jong game, not the lame sile pairing soliatre version. If you pay you can even confiure your own rules.
They ever get around to a version that doesn’t require a DOS prompt? The more recent versions of Windows, going to and using DOS is a horrible experience. Tended to crash my old computer bad, and with WinXP I wouldn’t know for sure if you can do it at all.
Sadly, no. Nothing has been done since v.1.5, the supermag shield still needs to be fixed.
Sherlock may be a bit low-fi, but it’s a great logic game.
I like this game alot. Unfortunately I’m not willing to spew 30 bones for it. Maybe if it was 10, but no more. Nobody should have to pay that much for such an outdated game.
Fortune Raiders, from Dexterity Software:

That company releases interesting games, but this is a simple one and adictive as hell!! For two years I have been playing it (from time to time, of course) and it seems to me as funny as the first time. Worth a try, believe me, even with his 16 colors graphics!
I’ve been playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory since the day it came out.
It is only a demo test right now, but it even when it is released it will be a completely free download.
