I’m always interested in how people relate to the lyrics of music. Anyway, what I would like to know is if you have ever been in this situation, and how did you feel? Did you feel the same?
Didn’t want to have to do it
Didnt want to have to break your heart
Didnt want to have to do it, no
I kept hoping from the very start
But you, kept on trying
And I knew, that you’d end up cryin
And I didn’t want to have to be the one to do it at all…
I think it’s a great topic Doob. I think just about everybody can relate to the lyrics in songs some time or another. Songs are a great form of expression and art.(Most of the time, there are just plain BAD songs out there, of course.) Poetry put to catchy beats. Feelings, emotions, of all sorts, love, heartache, happiness, belted out with a great voice and good music, how can that not touch someone?
My song of the day today would have to be “These are Days” by 10,000 maniacs. It’s a pretty nice day, and that song makes me feel good, reminds me of springtime.
I like it here-can I stay?
And do you have a vacancy for a Back-scrubber?
“‘Fall in love, fall in love,’ says my heart.
‘It’s romance—take a chance’—says my heart.
But each time that I’m almost in your arms,
This old schoolteacher brain of mine keeps ringing in false alarms.
Then my head rules instead and I’m wise
To the scheme of that gleam in your eyes.
So I kiss and run—but the moment we’re apart,
‘Oh, you fool! That was love!’ says my heart!”
I’ve always been able o relate to these They Might Be Giants lyrics:
If I were a carpenter I’d
hammer on my piglet, I’d
collect the seven dollars and I’d
buy a big prosthetic forehead
and wear it on my real head
Everybody wants prosthetic
foreheads on their real heads.
Mike Mulligan had a steam shovel,
a beautiful red steam shovel.
Her name was Mary Anne.
While it may be too Angry-White-Girl for some, Ani DiFranco has always hit the nail on the head for me with this one:
I tend to be outspoken, and get REALLY angry when I say something, get yelled at, and then someone comes up to me afterwards and is like “Gee, I agreed with you, but you were getting so much flack for saying what you did…”
And yes, I am a bit ashamed to say I can relate to the OP.
Look for a while at the China Cat Sunflower
proud-walking jingle in the midnight sun
Copper-dome bodhi drip a silver kimono
like a crazy-quilt star gown
through a dream night wind
– Robert Hunter/Jerry Garcia, “China Cat Sunflower”
Sometimes I feel exactly like that.
Then I know it’s time for a big dose of Vitamin B-complex.
SwimmingRiddles I agree with you, though it may be over done. I love Ani D too.
but the lyrics that I identify with the most often are:
tonight you stooped to my level
your mangey little whore
your trying to find your underwear
your socks and then the door
and your trying to find a reason why you have to leave
i know it’s 'cause you think your adam
and you think i’m eve
you rhapsodize about beauty
my eyes glaze
everything i love is ugly
i mean really
you’d be amazed
you put a tiny pin prick in my big red balloon
i slowly start to exhale when you leave the room
i did not design this game
i did not name the stakes
i just happen to like apples
and i am not afraid of snakes
i am so sorry about all this
i hear ignorance is bliss(?can’t remember exact line)
My past has not been brilliant. oh well.
now I do have someone who treats me right and is not a snake.
I love you honey kiss
I am a fire whose flames lick and spit at the boundless sky forever desiring wonderous consummation
-me
Now here you go again
You say you want your freedom
Well who am I to keep you down-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I remember the time I answered a personal ad in the paper looking for someone who liked Pina Coladas and getting caught in the rain, and when I met my date it turned out to be my husband, I can relate to songs like that. (KIDDING!)
Sorry to screw up your serious thread, Doob…oddly enough I was listening to a song today that never really clicked with me before but today the lyrics really reminded me of something and mad me so sad. Something along the lines of:
It’s getting to the point
where nothing’s gonna stop it now
it’s getting to the point
of no return
there’s nothing I can do
but say “I’m sorry”
and watch it burn, burn, burn.
Man…what a downer!
“Love Story? There’s two things wrong with that movie: No Smokey, and no Bandit!” – Eric Forman, That 70’s Show
i ALWAYS relate to songs, and with that, i usually cry.
to name a few:
second to one - sarah stefanson
just pretend - sarah stefanson
not given lightly - frente!
as is - ani difranco
the ariivals gate - ani difranco
fed - jen lane
picture - jen lane
even if my heart would break - kenny g. and aaron neville
the one she will adore - (it was written for me)
misery - the moffatts
head over feet - alanis morissette
and the current one: chosen one - smog
and most importantly, the very simple song by smog which verified that i was on top of my thoughts, and to be strong in my decision… (no matter how much he cried and told me to always remember him like that.) (what a fucker.)
inspirational - smog
if you’re living
the unliveable
by loveing
the unloveable
it’s time to start changing
the unchangeable
by leaving
the unleaveable
yes it is now
if you’re living
the unliveable
by loving
the unloveable
it’s time to start breaking
the unbreakable
and replacing
the irreplaceable
yes it is now.
if wishes were fishes, we could walk on the ocean.
