K. Mrs. Barker (or was it Parker?) nice
1st &2nd Miss Wood (not nice)
3rd Miss Evil
4th Miss Nice
5th Mrs. Evil
6th Mrs. Meh
Went to Amherst 18 (a.k.a. Harlem Road School) outside of Buffalo.l
Kindergarten - Miss Schaefler (who later became Mrs. Hitchcock)
First - Mrs. Ferguson
Second - Mrs. Benton, who left halfway through the year to have a baby and was replaced by Miss Wood.
Third - Mrs. Suggs (When I went home for X-Mas '08, I read her obit in the papers. I was kind of surprised she’d lived that long.)
Fourth - Mrs. Ferguson
Fifth - Miss Batera (I HATED her! We called her Miss Bacteria behind her back.)
Sixth - Mr. Balcom (first male teacher I ever had.)
I can’t remember the name of anyone of my teachers for any grade or college and i’m only 31. I can picture some faces but thats about it.
K-3rd: Mrs. Frank with an assistant Mrs. Holden/Hulten/Hu-something
4th: Mr. C something. He was openly gay but amazingly of the thirteen of us only one turned out to be gay.
5th: Ms. Hall and don’t forget it’s miz, especially you damn males, you need to learn some respect for once in your life before you go off and start oppressing women.
6th: Moved to another town (it had a high school! and separate class rooms!) but can’t remember the teachers.
7th: Mrs. Tara-something-ski, Mr. Anderso, Mr. I don’t ‘believe’ in evolution. From what I know about him now, his co-workers would describe him in the Ron Thread.
8th: Mrs. Williams, Mrs. Gorbowski, Mr. Barr, Mrs. something had a kid was replaced by Miss something the hot student teacher.
With the exception of Mrs. Williams, I would rank them below average, just trying to survive until retirement. High school class of 2000.
Nursery School: Mrs. Raymond and Miss Beers, who were still there when I was in high school, and remembered me when I visited when I was a senior. (It was a “pre-school lab,” located in the high school, where kids who took child development classes would spend one period a week in the pre-school, assigned to be a “special friend” for one particular little kid.)
Kindergarten: Mrs. Bocchio. She was really mean and threatened to put a huge paper donkey tail on your bottom if you were bad. She was old with a wattly neck like a turkey.
1st grade: Miss Perry, who was an older lady who was very nice.
2nd grade: Mrs. Morgan for the first half of the year. She was young and pretty with dark hair. Halfway through the year, she left to have a baby, and I remember when they announced on the intercom that she had her baby and we all cheered. Unfortunately, her baby passed away when it was only about a week old, and she didn’t come back that year
After she left, we got a “permanent sub,” Miss Schaap, who was really mean and strict.
3rd grade: Mrs. O’Neil, who was really cool and really liked me.
And that year, I had Mrs. Mencuccini for math class. (They were trying to get us used to moving between classes, for when we went to middle school.)
4th grade: Mrs. Sabia, who was young and nice, and had a daughter in my same class. I had Miss Carberry for math class that year.
5th grade: Miss Stanton, who was cranky and mean and strict.
I had Mrs. Hammer for English and Mr. Doyle for math that year.
And after that, I went on to middle school and had a different teacher for each class.
FTR, I’m 29.
I’ll give it a try! (I’m 56.)
Kindy-garden: Mrs. Gonyea
1st Grade: Miss Fitzgerald
2nd Grade: Mrs. Axtell
3rd Grade: Miss Fitzgerald (Same lady, different school)
4th Grade: Mr. Burley
5th Grade: Mr. Courelli
6th Grade: Mr. Cole
Are you sure he didn’t have his doctorate?
Over 50 here.
K: Miss Shoemaker
1: Mrs. Howell
2: Mrs. Kemp
3: Miss Samuels
- Mrs. Parmenter (the best teacher I EVER had…I wish I could find her and thank her.)
5: Miss Webster / Mrs. Edgecombe (got married halfway through the year)
6: Mrs. Byrne (a Brooklynite - we made fun of her Brooklynese.)
I’m 42. I attended Lusher Elementary in New Orleans.
K-Ms. Lafrere and Ms. Anthony
1st Ms. Barclay/Ms. Levitch
2nd Ms. Cortez
3rd Ms. Picard/ Ms. Washington
4th Ms. Smith
5th Ms. Hoffmann
6th Ms. Flaxbeard
Librarian: Ms. Williams
Principals while I was there: Ms. Weddle, Ms. Eli, Mr. Fudesco
(all from memory)
I’m 27. And a little drunk. Let’s give it a try.
K: Miss Drake. I ended up in her class after the first week in someone else’s class. I remember she had “jobs” for everyone in the class, and you rotated through them day by day. The best job was “line leader.”
1st: Mr. Grother. He had the most amazing voice – a sonorous baritone which, years later, I would recognize on the radio before he confirmed his identity.
2nd: Mrs. Jacobie. She was kind of old. She started each day with an arithmetic quiz that I never quite got the hang of. She tried to “teach” us about dinosaurs during a period when I knew more about dinosaurs than some paleontologists, and I distinctly remember the first time she said something wrong about it (for the record, she said that iguanadon was a meat-eater – bitch was crazy), because it was the first time I realized that authority figures are not omniscient.
3rd: Mrs. Durham. I remember that she really “got” me, and taught in a way that both challenged me and helped me learn. This was in the early '90s, and her big thing was that she wanted us to remember that the Gulf War was happening.
4th: Mrs. Thomas. I hated her. Her big thing was “group projects,” where I always ended up doing 90% of the work, and everyone else slacked off. I complained about this to my parents, who arranged a special meeting between them, me, Mrs. Thomas, and the Principal. I remember this meeting being horrifying, because they made me essentially accuse my teacher aloud of making us do too much group work, and her response (which I’ll never forget) was to get this injured look on her face and say, “What?? We barely do ANY group work!” Bitch totally threw me under the bus.
5th: Mrs. McHenry. The first teacher who treated us with some semblance of being adults.
6th: Mrs. Billingsly. I found out later that my parents used some local political influence to get me assigned to Mrs. Billingsly, who they thought was the best teacher at the school. She considered me gifted, and demanded higher standards from me. I would end up more-or-less skating through middle school and high school, so 6th grade was the last time before college where anyone really sized me up and provided me with the challenge I needed to reach my full potential. Earlier this year, I went to a party with my parents and Mrs. Billingsly was there. It was an extremely proud moment for me to tell her that I’d attended a prestigious college and was excelling in law school, and I attributed my success partly to her influence, 15 years ago.
Principal: Yancy Whitworth. Who could forget a name like that? Poor man.
- Mrs. Sprague (smelly)
- Mrs. Frey (little recall)
- Mr. Kaplan (awesome)
- Mrs. McWilliams (terrible. long story)
- Mrs. Peters (odd, but okay I guess)
- Dr. Foree until he got hit by a car, then Mrs. Dutcher (awesome!)
the question is WHY is this clogging up my memory?
edit to add, I’m nearly forty, if we’re keeping track
38 here.
K: Mrs. Colby. I can recall her face, but I don’t remember much about her.
1st: Ms. Eisenberg. She was young, a teacher by day and a disco dancer by night.
2nd: Mrs. Berkstrom. My main memory of her was her southern accent, and we all thought it was quite funny (this was in the Los Angeles area).
3rd: Mrs. Wallace. My first year in San Jose. She tried her damnedest to get me to stop biting my fingernails.
4th: Ms. Mickelson. Looking back on it, I’m almost positive she was a lesbian. She had us do these “speed-math” tests: once a week we would be tested on the basic arithmetic facts through 10 * 10; there would be 40 or 50 per operator, and you had to get the majority of them right in under five minutes (per operator, so there were four tests). Once this was accomplished, you moved on to the next round - which was doing the same thing, but only having four minutes per test. By the end of the year I had one of the best overall scores - I’d completed them all in under three minutes, and had addition done in under two.
5th: Mrs. Wright and Mrs. Benassi. It was a double-size class, about 60 kids, with two teachers. They were both gargantuan, and everyone hated them; leading up to 5th grade, we all prayed we would get the other 5th grade teacher, the young good-looking one, Ms. Rodman. It was a one in three chance, and I lost. Oh, yeah, and their “nicknames” were Fright and Fat-Ass-y.
I’m 49, and remember most of my primary-school teachers. I’m not so sure about Grade 1 because my teacher in the earlier part of the year was killed in a car-accident and was replaced with a variety of subsitute teachers for the rest of the school term. Also, I changed schools half-way through year 5 which is why there are two teachers there for the list.
Prep: A cranky auld crone named Mrs Gow.
Grade 1: ??
Grade 2: Mrs Holbrook
Grade 3: Mrs Dickens
Grade 4: Mr Marshman
Grade 5: Mrs Mohn/Miss Bailey
Grade 6: Mr Ryan
Let’s see. I’m 20 years out of high school this year, let me see if I can remember everyone.
K: Miss Green followed by Dr. Robinson
1: Dr. Robinson, team teachers included Mrs. Kaufmann, Ms. Sisk and Ms. Negri
2: Mrs. Halligan, team teachers were Mrs. Kaufmann & Ms. Sisk
3 - 5: Dr. Rusnak with Ms. Campbell and I can’t remember the other in-room teacher’s last name but her first name was Carissa, with Mrs. Edmondson, Dr. Thyberg, Dr. Martin & Dr. Winikoff as team teachers
6 & 7: Mrs. O’Farrell with Mr. Snozek and Mr. Stone, IIRC as in-room, with Dr. McDonald, Dr. Altenbaugh and Ms. Williams as team teachers. One of the other in-room teachers I recall was Ms. Antin.
Art: Mrs. Donohue, Music: Drs. Mushalko & D’Angelo, Gym: Dr. Wagner, Library: Mrs. Gates K-4, then Mrs. Edmondson transferred down to library and was there the rest of my time there.
One of our 2nd grade teachers was Miss Plunket. My brother had her, and spent the entire year laughing at her name.
I remember every one of my grade school teachers:
Kindergarten: Mrs. Bowling - She used to have a semi-circular desk that we would line up next to for her to check our work sheets. She also played piano.
1st Grade: Mrs. Wright - An older woman who was rather strict and who I thought was mean to me. She always criticized my coloring. The thing was, I had a hard time staying inside the lines when I colored and her comments were not helpful at all.
2nd Grade: Mrs. Rich - A redhead. She had to take a long time off due to some sort of illness, so we had a long term sub named Mrs. Spinner. Both were very nice and fun to be around.
3rd Grade: I had two 3rd grade teachers because I moved to a different school district. The first was Mrs. Ragotzi, who was older, but very nice. The 2nd was Mrs. Stull who made it a point to really make me feel at home when I entered her class.
4th Grade: Ms. Clarke - The first teacher I had a crush on. She was very pretty. She got married during the school year and became Mrs. Hunt. I also found out she was Jewish.
5th Grade: Mrs. Cairns - Going into 5th grade, she was the teacher everyone did not want. She was said to be very mean, but she turned out to be a great teacher, one of the best ones I ever had. She read “The Chronicles of Narnia” to us.
6th Grade: Mr. McGee - Also a very nice teacher. He had some back problems and was always complaining about it. He introduced us to the “Choose your own Adventure” book series.
Easy!
- Sister Mary Roberta
- Sister Mary Roberta/Sister Mary Therese
- Sister Mary Roberta
- Mrs. Stafford
- Mrs. Cox
Let’s see…
Nursery School: Mrs. Harlan
Kindergarten: ? dangit
1st Grade: Mrs. McCall
2nd Grade: Mrs. Adamson / Mrs. Grabowski
3rd Grade: Mrs. Gornto
4th Grade: Mrs. Norwood
5th Grade: Mrs. Walker
6th Grade: Mrs. Mason
it falls apart very badly after that, with one teacher per subject, etc.
EDIT: I’m 50
I only remember Miss Cabral, who was a student teacher when I was in first grade, in 1948. She was young and enthusiastic and especially excited about being able to buy a car, as that was the first year American auto makers began producing cars after producing nothing but military vehicles from 1942 through 1946.
Let’s see, I’m a nerd about stuff like that.
Kindergarten: Went to GCS for one year, blue & gold Soldiers. Sweet sweet Mrs. Summers, who I thought was an old lady, but probably was in her 40s or so. I only went half a day.
1st-3rd: I went to EES, the maroon and gold leopards (cheetahs?). First grade I had Mrs. Oakley. I thought she was a mean old lady! Second and third grade I was in a split class for advanced kids with Mrs. Cottrell. I loved her and was so happy to have her twice. She was pregnant my second year with her.
4th-5th I was at MACS, the maroon and white patriots! My favorite school of all I attended. I had Mrs. Hall in 4th grade, who I did NOT like, and Mrs. McMullen in 5th, who I loved. After I grew up she started going to my church, so I see her all the time now. My brother had her sister for a teacher that same year, which was fun.
6th I switched to PRES, the red & white Pirates! I had Mr. Woodard, who I thought was a weird old man. I didn’t much like 6th grade until I got put in TAG (Mrs. Baker & Mrs. B… Oh no I forgot the other lady’s name! It started with a B too), joined the band (flute with Mr. Castle) and became a safety patrol.
7th and 8th was BJHS, later BMS (changed from Jr. High to Middle school while I was there). Still red & white pirates. I could probably give my schedule if it wouldn’t be boring. Favorite teachers were Mrs. Pardue and Mrs. Gensler.
9th-12th at the wonderful BHS. Go Pirates! Again, I can give my schedule for all 4 years, I think. I tried it awhile back and only forgot the name of my Driver’s Ed instructor, so could probably still do it.
