Not that you need to list them. Nobody would know whether they were real names or just some you made up. But if you want to go by a percentage of the class as a guess, that will work okay.
The point has to do with how affected you are by the people you’ve come into contact with. First grade is a momentous occasion for many people, especially those who had no prior schooling. Maybe Sunday School would compare, but I won’t assume many have had tremendous experience there, and it’s just a once-a-week thing anyway.
In my own case, I don’t remember a single name! When I was much younger but still a decade or two from grade school I encountered a guy from first grade and recognized him instantly, although we were both grown at the time. I even remembered his name and where he sat in the classroom.
I suspect I’d have trouble nowadays with over half of any of the grades in any school years – including college.
How about you? And, if it’s no big deal to you, how long ago was first grade?
My first reaction was “none”, but with just a little thought I came up with approximately 1/4 of my first-grade classmates. That would have been 27 years ago.
I’ll never forget when Cassie Boehm showed me her boobs in first grade, they looked pretty much just like mine.
At least 75% of them. Then again, I’m only 19, and I had a small class (around 20) and most of us went together until Grade 8 and even went on to high school and university together, so…
But there are a few I really don’t remember because they left the school shortly after - but if I were to see my class pic, I could probably share a memory of each person.
Dondy Galobowitz pooped in the corner. He was held back.
I could probably remember a lot of people that were in the first grade with me, but since there were several classrooms, I’m not sure who was in my classroom or in another.
Most of them but then again, I had a small class (45 or so) and we all went from Kindergarten all the way through high school together. Few new people moved in although many ended up dropping out towards the end.
Zero. I can recall maybe a name or two from the rest of my elementary school years, and I wouldn’t do much better with high school. Interestingly, my grandmother, even after she was in the throes of Alzheimers, could still name every kid from her first grade (?) class picture.
I remember a lot of first names, but not a lot of last names. I was in a private first grade and then went to public schools in 2nd. Several of the kids did the same and I went to school with them until I moved in 7th Grade.
It helps that one of them was my cousin (yes, I remember her name) and she went to school with those kids until she graduated.
I would see them when I would visit.
So, I’d say a good number.
None of them, except my cousin, had any real bearing on my life…
Funny you should ask. I was cleaning out the garage yesterday and came across a box full of old school photos, report cards, etc. So, I can rather smugly say that I can name all of my classmates from grades 1-6.
However, I must also admit that my report cards include many comments about disrupting the classroom and poor study habits.
Amazing and encouraging! I have heard from more than a few sources that our early memories are in a portion of our brains that don’t get as easily erased. I’d buy into this notion if it weren’t for this issue under discussion. The only thing going for me and first grade is that I was only in mine for a month, maybe less. They promoted me to second grade because I knew my ABC’s. But it’s the same basic story for the second grade, too. I can name maybe 20 kids from grade school, equal numbers of boys and girls, but I moved from that town to start 7th grade and hardly ever saw any of them after then.
There’s a website where interested people can sign up under their class in school and use that site to connect with each other – if interested. Classmates. I look over the list of over 100 names and remember maybe 1/3 of them. Haven’t been to a school reunion yet.
That’s a toughie. If you spend a few grades in one elementary school, you’re going to have had most of the kids as classmates at one time or another multiple times. Remembering which ones happened to be in any given class isn’t easy. I’m pretty sure that Bob T was in my first grade class, and I know that Kim M was in my second grade class because I recall sitting next to her when we heard about the JFK assassination. From early elementary years, I remember those 2 plus maybe 2 others. As far as placing someone definitely in first grade, I’d say one.
I can remember a few names and a couple more faces.
My two best friends (one who I haven’t seen since grade 3, but I’ve run into her mother and hear about her from Dad at the odd time… the other I ran into a few years back and man he grew up HOT). For some reason I remember the kid-who-ate-paste’s name. A couple other faces, but no names bubble up from that memory.
That’s about it. I did find some pictures/names of classmated from grade 5 or so last week though.
