Can you sharpen ceramic knives?

Recently I purchased a couple of ceramic kitchen knives. Now I’m wondering if I can sharpen them like I do my steel ones. I use a ceramic sharpener to hone the edge to ensure it stays sharp. Do you do that with ceramic ones?

It seems you can but need a diamond sharpener and hopefully one that was made for a ceramic knife

It’s possible, but they need it so seldom that it may work out to be more effective to just send it to the manufacturer. Most all of them do the re-sharpening free. If they actually re-sharpening them at all. I think that they just send you a new knife of the same model.

Ok Thanks

Also you mention honing, that is not sharpening, but as I understand it aligning the metal crystals i a uniform direction, that is done with that round sword like thing. Ceramic knifes would not have metallic crystal structures so honing would not preform that function AFAIK

Those round sword like things don’t hone or sharpen the blade both of which require removal of metal to form an edge, or align metal crystals which is what happens in the quenching and tempering of the metal; what they do is deform the feathered edge of the blade back into a sharpish edge.

Which for kitchen knives is good enough, a slightly rough “sharp” edge is usually sharp enough for food and for somethings is preferable than a truly sharp knife.
