In short, size ten boot does not necessarily fit a size 9 1/2 foot, not even doubling up on the socks. And word, ladies- pink makes a large thing look even larger. So the pink boots need to go. Yet I’ve somehow lost the box. I should know better by now than to lose the box.
They were bought at Ross Dress For Less, the only store in the world, as far as I’m concerned.
I’ve never heard of that store, but you make it sound like you’re a regular. Do the sales people/managers/owner know you? If they do, and you’re a good customer, they might be able to work with you.
If there’s something wrong with an item, then you can certainly return it without the box - I’ve had customer service people challenge me on this (“Oh, we can’t take it back if you threw away the packaging”), but they invariably back down when it is pointed out that the Sale Of Goods Act refers to faulty merchandise, not faulty packaging.
But in cases of buyer’s remorse or other return of a non-faulty item without the packaging, you pretty much have to throw yourself on their mercy. Try the really grovelly approach and lay the facts out in your opening spiel - don’t wait for them to notice that the box is missing or it will look like you’re trying to pull a fast one.
Our company returns policy (for buyer remorse rather than faulty goods) is: goods must be returned in saleable condition. That does include the packaging if we can’t swap it out on a replacement.
Simply put: They cannot get the same retail price for the boots if they’re not in the box and it’s up to them if they’re willing to take a loss on goods you chose, knowing they were the wrong size.
You may strike a helpful salesperson - especially if you’re okay with store credit or replacement - good luck.
Years ago, when I worked in a boot store, we would have exchanged these boots for a size 9-1/2 for her – but she would have had to carry them home in a sack – we would keep the 9-1/2 box to use for the size 10 boots she was returning, just changing the marking to “10”.
Tangential anecdote:
A friend of mine took some faulty shoes back to the shop once because the part of the sole cracked and detached after just a week. Their response? “Ah! You’ve been walking in these shoes”…
His response (he was a man of very fast wit) was “That’s absolutely right - I use a different pair for drinking out of”
I’d think that a department store like Ross will probably take the boots back according to their policy. A boot shop probably would not since the soles will have at least a few scuffs and the upper will be slightly wrinked at the ankle.
FYI- a good pair of insoles will shrink the size by about 1/2. Thus 9.5+ thick sox+thick insoles= sz10. Or maybe even 10.5 as your feet swell after walking for a while.
I would try to take them back, but be humble, not demanding.
