Hi, I am trying out a new front page for my site. It uses Javascript and php stuff in all sorts of funky ways I have never done before. I just want some people to test it out and reply to this thread if it seems to work fine for ya, before I make it real. It seems to work fine in my Internet Explorer.
Firefox 0.8 here (and yes, I suspect there are later builds)… everything looks good to me. All links I tried work, everything scrolls correctly and all content looks formatted properly.
iCab (2.9.8) makes hash of the formatting, with some of the text splashing out of the box and into the surrounding pale blue background, and the little “open source think tank” box with the archives links in it is rendered as a full-sized box above rather than to the side of The Wisdom Project box.
Opera (6.0) does fine with it.
So does Netscape (7.1).
Mozilla X11 (rv:1.3) has no problem with it.
Ancient History Zone:
Netscape 4.0 makes worse hash of the formatting than iCab, with the contents of the “open source think tank” box superimposed on elements of the “Wisdom Project” box, but the links work. Got into the forum OK.
Mosaic 2.0 can’t load it at all, says there’s no such place as “indexpage” at the address referenced.
Not enough. Each user’s OS, screen size, display preferences, avalable fonts and a zillion of other small details can affect the result. It is very useful to have feedback from a large number of users, if you can.
Works fine here with Mozilla and IE. Small bug: the title of the page is “new page 1”. The links from the menu open in new windows. (frameset values?)
You’ve talked about this Mozilla X11 before. Pardon my ignorance, but: What is it? Is it available for download or did you do it yourself? If the former, where can I get it?
rkts: I have the X11 environment and Fink and Fink Commander installed. (The first of which was custom-installed along with the OS from the install CD and the latter two available from VersionTracker). From Fink Commander, I selected “mozilla” and ran the script for downloading the source code from sourceforge and compiling it in the terminal. Four hundred thirty nine thousand two hundred and five screens’ of compilation dialog later the build is finished, and from the X11 command line I run /sw/bin/mozilla and up it pops.
It’s the same source code as for mozilla for Linux or BSD or any other Unix system with an X11 environment.
It’s a blazing fast browser that will simultaneously load a couple dozen pages without breaking a sweat or losing responsiveness, and is pretty much compatible with everything I’ve thrown at it that doesn’t require proprietary plugins (and even some that do). The down side is that the X11 environment is still a bit of a separate space from the Aqua world. Much like VirtualPC (except minus the speed hit, of course), you can do a limited bit of text-only copy and pasting but system-wide hacks and menu add-ons and whatnot dont’ apply there. Can’t record a QuicKeys macro to start a

tag in an X11 application like I can an Aqua app. Can’t use the DefaultFolder widgets to switch focus to recently visited or currently open or favorite folders, so I have to navigate the slow way. Can’t integrate it with Eudora so clicking a mailto:yourname@yourdomain.com in Mozilla X11 doesn’t provoke Eudora into sending the outbound mail, nor does clicking http://www.somedangdomain.url in Eudora prompt Mozilla X11 into opening the page, which are things I can do with any Aqua browser.
Nevertheless, for all that, it’s a very nice browser.
Thanks for the explanation. I installed Fink and downloaded Mozilla according to your instructions, and it works, although I can’t say I see much of a difference from the standard Mac version, in terms of speed or anything else.
