I am looking to sell some First Edition books - a run of one of my favorite Canadian authors, Robertson Davies. I have first Canadians of all three of his trilogies - Salterton, Deptford and Cornish - as well as a couple of his Samuel Marchbanks books from the late 1940’s and a couple of other U.S. firsts that are signed, etc.
I love my books and still love Davies, but am pursuing a wonderful old acoustic guitar and one’s Toy Budget can only be so big. So I am looking to sell my Davies firsts as a group*.
In the U.S., I sell my books most often to Bauman’s Rare Books. They advertise on the back of the NYTimes weekend Book Review often. They cater to a fancy clientele, with shops on Madison Avenue in NY, etc., and are willing to pay top dollar for books they need for their inventory. (I couldn’t afford to buy there, but love selling to them!! ;))
Since Davies is Canadian, I believe I will get more interest from a Canadian bookseller. So I am trying to get a sense of who deals in top books and may be willing to go the extra distance to get a great set of Davies’ books. Doing some checking online, I have seen the following booksellers:
- A Good Read
- Attic Books
- Monarchy Rare Books
- TBCL - The Book Collectors Library
- Inno Dubelaar Books
Any Dopers know about these sellers or any other rare book dealers that may be like Bauman’s in the U.S.? TBCL has the most Bauman-like website, near as I can tell.
Any input would be great! Thanks in advance!
*Yes, I could try to sell these individually via eBay or something and try to get Retail prices, but I don’t have the time given work and family commitments, and finding a top dealer is a great way to move a group of books quickly. Done it many times in the past- I get a good Wholesale price.
ETA: Not sure if this should be in IMHO about opinions on book dealers, or in Cafe Society. I will ping the Mods…
