Is Canada aiding in airstrikes against ISIS or something? Why the hell have the jihadists launced 2 attacks in less than a week?
I’m wondering if the US is going to lock down the border, to try to keep these guys from getting into our country.
I hadn’t seen any details indicating terrorists. CNN just said it’s several gunmen (2-3). I assumed either local crazies or something along those lines.
I doubt the US would close the border with Canada, regardless.
Is Canada seen as a softer target in comparison with the US?
Probably. They don’t seem to get away with much in Britain either.
I know Canada has made it as hard to get to Syria and Iraq as we have in the US.
More likely this is an act of one or more local crazies. That’s what happened on Monday.
CNN is really pissing me off. “How could a shooter get all the way from the War Memorial to Parliament?” Look at the very google map you’re displaying, you idiots.
I’m going to have to turn this off and start looking again in four or five hours, when maybe they’ve gained some coherence.
But, before I go, I predict this is one shooter moving along the line of the incidents, and that shooter is dead. It’s all over. I hope.
I’m sure Fox News is already scrambling to figure out how this is all Obama’s fault.
People don’t realize how compact Ottawa is. Parliament, the war memorial, Chateau Laurier and the Rideau Centre are all within the space of a few blocks.

There are reports that a car was commandeered and driven to Parliament, which would make it even easier to get that short distance. I do find it a bit hard to believe that a gunman could run all the way across the grounds and make it into the Centre Block without being intercepted by security.
I lean towards there being a single gunman as well. The shots heard at Chateau Laurier and the Rideau Centre could easily have been comes from Parliament or the War Memorial. I’m having trouble understanding why multiple gunmen would split up. The (admittedly fragmentary) reports that we’ve gotten so far make this sounds like a incoherent mess: a single shooting at the War Memorial followed by one person storming Parliament? If you’re going to pull off a terrorist attack in downtown Ottawa there are much more effective ways to kill people. This sounds like the work of one crazy person with no real plan to me. Of course, it’s always possible that something more sophisticated was planned but things went wrong at the last minute.
The news just came in that the soldier shot at the War Memorial has died. 
Very close together. Cross the road diagonally from the Rideau Centre to get to the Chateau Laurier, diagonally in the opposite direction from the Chateau to the War Memorial, and diagonally again to the Parliament Buildings.
This. This is a pretty small area and as was said upthread, the shooter reportedly commandeered a car.
I am in Ottawa regularly and have many friends and colleagues there. I have been hearing from friends that are locked in secure rooms or that have been evacuated from their buildings. It is a terrible situation.
I too suspect that this is the work of one or two “radicalized” crazies that have been encouraged by the event in Quebec and/or ISIS propaganda. But we will know more eventually.

Canada hasn’t had a 9/11 or 7/7, so I doubt it beefed up security as much as the US and UK.

Surprised no one has posted pics or video of the shooter yet. I heard some bystanders got it.
CBC now reporting that RCMP have said that the third shooting near Rideau Centre didn’t happen. Looking more like a lone crazy shooter. RCMP are about to hold a news conference…might know more soon.
