Canadian Parliament Attacked

Uh yeah. I will trust the vetting of news on 2 respected national news programs over a local talk radio station* news update. Call me crazy.

  • an AM station no less! Lol

Well, sure, I’m certain what you describe happens.

And should such complacency exist in the guards at Parliament we would have further cause for concern.

But I refuse to describe today’s events as acceptable on account of the guards being bored.

I am not making excuses, and evidence is still coming in, BUT…

At this time, there are others in hospital, evidence is still coming in. Maybe the guards were shot and incapacitated, maybe there were other shooters (there was another lockdown and unconfirmed rumours) so until we know for sure what happened, let’s hold off on roasting the guards over an open spit.

One possibility is that he simply stormed in, the hall could have been full of people and tourists and most security/police will still hesitate to start shooting if there are a bunch of innocent people panicking.

I am sure even by tomorrow morning we’ll have a clearer picture of what happened.

Well yeah. How many events like this do you have to see before you stop trusting the initial frantic reporting?

Agreed.

CFRA is owned by Bell Media, the parent company of CTV. They share the same reporters and stories and are also affiliated with CNN.

LOL yourself.

You have no idea.

You really think the standards trickle down? Two words: Lowell Green.

I am reserving judgement. Feel free to not do so.

If you want to conflate or confuse call-in radio with news programs and reporting then go ahead.

I’m not. Just pointing out their premiere star is a full of shit blowhard. If that doesn’t effect your impression of the station you can go ahead. If you think CFRA has news standards equal to the CBC national news, you can do that too.

And so, I like Lowell Green and agree with him on pretty much everything.

Wow. Just relax. All I said is that I am waiting before I believe the reports I am hearing. Why the fuck are you making this a personal argument?

The coverage illustrates a very great difference between network news reporting in Canada and network news reporting in the USA, e.g. Coverage of the Ottawa shooting, in one very revealing screenshot - Vox

Here’s an opinion article concerning the different approaches that puts it better than I could:

Seriously annoyed at this, some dude wants to shoot a bunch of politicians, have at it. But why did they have to shoot a soldier.

Declan

Why not?

On a political level, because those politicians are doing their best to represent their constituents and continue to build our country. We have a stable and prosperous democracy, and their efforts are key to this.

On a personal level, a couple of them are friends of mine. I don’t want them harmed in any way, and I’m angry that some murdering ideological asshole went after them.

You can run around like Chicken Little yelling, “That’s unacceptable!” at the top of your lungs all you like, but the fact is that there is no protection against a lone, kamikaze gunman. If we tried, we wouldn’t be able to move for all the security forces surrounding each and every one of us each and every minute of the day.

Fact is, a free society has tradeoffs. We accept reasonable risks in order to avoid living in the type of society that has security forces every where. Well, those of us who aren’t cowering under their beds do.

I agree with this.

Let’s not let gunmen rule us with fear and make us react by creating a police state, please.

If they come we will deal with them, as Canadians; they may cause tragedies like the death of this soldier, but they will not change who we are.

Uh, that would be getting shot in the leg, Bob.

Where’s the “like button” on this thing?

This is a terrible thing to say.

Here are the actual pictures of the Sergeant-at-Arms moments after he took care of the problem.
