Canadian Politics 2022-2023

An “analysis” from the National Post is worth about as much as two sheets of toilet paper.

It actually wasn’t completely awful much to my surprise.

Trudeau says ‘credible allegations’ tie India to murder in Canada

Canadian authorities are pursuing “credible allegations” tying agents of the Indian government to the slaying of a prominent Sikh leader on Canadian soil in June, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told lawmakers Monday.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen who advocated for the creation of a separate Sikh state in the Punjab region of India, was shot dead in his vehicle by two masked gunmen outside the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara temple in Surrey, British Columbia. Nijjar, who was born in India but based in Canada, was president of the temple. He was 45.

And now India is all butt-hurt at Canada for pointing out the blindingly obvious.

“Saudi Arabia can do it, why can’t we?”

Because they have oil and they’re sneaky about it when they murder someone.

Hey look! Golf!

How the hell could this be allowed to happen? Why has the Speaker not resigned?

Paywalled, sadly.

I agree he should step down. The man has staff to vet things for him. And he failed to share his intention to present his theatrics to anyone around him. That’s two strikes to my mind.

Finding out this was a constituent/contributor from his district?Strike three!

‘Partisan theatrics, glow up a constituent/supporter, no need to run this by anyone, as I am all powerful’, seems to be his plan.

This kind of nonsense won’t stop until there are consequences. This is a prominent position, with a fat salary and perks. This behaviour was so far below any minimum expected due competence/diligence, as to be embarrassing.

He should be gone.

Try this.

I’m not sure I believe that is the case. I find it implausible that the PMO was taken completely by surprise here.

Canada will be disgraced before the world, and Russia has been handed a PR coup on a silver platter. This is a national humiliation.

No, it’s an embarrassment. Obviously Canada has full-throatedly supported Ukraine, so I doubt the PM intended this. Though the MP inviter is perhaps most responsible, the PMO clearly needs to do due doo-doo diligence. Such incidents imply the government does not take these issues sufficiently seriously and make government look inept. An apology is in order.

Since the MP instigator is the Speaker, this issue needs to be amplified.

I am very disappointed he has not already resigned.

Did someone tell an intern to find an old Ukrainian soldier to trot out and failed to perform the most basic check of their background? Without question. Was it deliberate? No way.

As SotH, I see Rota as having ministerial type responsibility for this and it should cost him his job.

I’m truly amazed at this level of incompetence. “We found a WW2 vet.” The next question should clearly be: “Which side did he fight for?”

I mean…

“fought for Ukrainian independence against the Russian aggressors then, and continues to support the troops today.”

What the ever-loving fuck? Who the fuck’s side does he think this nonagenerian was fighting on if he was a Ukrainian fighting the Russians in fucking World War II? How the hell does anyone not stop and try to think this through for even ten seconds?

Dumb-ass politician: Hmmm…let’s see now. So this guy was fighting the Russians. Who were our allies in that war. And the Russians were fighting…uhhh…the Nazis. Hmmm.

That’s just a truly, truly profound level of stupidity.

Yep. It sounds a lot like: “My ancestors fought for their home state against Northern aggression” …so they were confederates. I know he’s built and repeated this story so often it must be true to him today, but we don’t need to accept his after-the-fact rationalization of his service during WW2.

I agree. The Speaker must be above reproach. The Speaker acts as the guardian of the rights and privileges of Members and of the House as an institution. The Speaker must at all times have the confidence of the members. He does not have that anymore

He wasn’t just a German soldier, he was Waffen SS, a paramilitary arm of the Nazi party known for its many atrocities. Sort of a Nazi precursor to the Wagner Group.
