Canadian (Toronto) Talk Radio

On my way to work that takes about 50 minutes one way I happen to browse radio stations available in Toronto and one of those is AM640AM with John Oakley in the morning and Arlene Bynon in the afternoon.

Now apparently the station is a big hit – just the fact they exist to me is mind boggling. One of the things that came to my attention is that this station in its morning show has two regular “contributors” that seem out of this world, even for conservative standards.

First is former US ambassador to UN John Bolton and another is former adviser to UK’s Margaret Thatcher in the 1980’s Christopher Monckton. One can quickly summarize major talking points by each of them – 1st goes with “war, war and more war, Obama is weak, bomb Iran, war, war” and 2nd one blabbers on “I’m rich, he’s rich, you’re poor, we have money, you don’t have it and you don’t deserve the money.” I mean, how you get to hire these two dinosaurs of political thought who, while active in politics years ago, were abject failure in every possible way.

When I listen to their conversations with John Oakley it is almost surreal and so last century that I really LOL. Some of the mental constructs are border line insane and simply brutal.

As for afternoon show, Arlene has this incredible skill to weave into any story of the day perennial question she wrestles with daily on how culturally inferior immigrants are nowadays. I find myself listening to the lead-in story and now callers start calling in and I tell to myself, there is no way you can link “honor killing” and low percentage of foreign-born medical doctors in Canada. Well, she can do it. And, again big LOL!

I wonder if anyone listened to these guys and what do you think? Also, based on the notoriety and repetitiveness of their weekly “contribution” to the radio show I really wonder who pays these guys?

I wonder, what’s a general opinion on the “quality” of these shows and should we pay attention in the same way US talk-shows are “important” in social and political dynamic of the country?

Weird. I’ve never even heard of them. I’m a 41 y/o Canadian.

Why anyone would listen to politics from a radio station that’s neither CBC Radio 1 nor NPR is mind boggling to me.

AM640 is for listening to Bluejays games. I don’t think anyone actually listens at any other times.

Note This information is probably out of date as I haven’t listened to a ball game on the radio is 15 years or more.

I used to listen to MOJO640. Now the only terrestrial radio I listen to here is for traffic and news. The rest is XM (which has gone to crap after SIRIUS took over and took a dump on the playlists) or podcasts of former Toronto radio guys Humble and Fred.

I would suspect that talk radio in Canada is just listening to opinions being shared, unlike talk radio in the US that appears to have the ability to influence public policy.
