Okay, with regard to racism having a significant effect on the investigation, I don’t buy it.
Of course that’s not to say that we don’t have a continuing problem with anti-indo attitudes – every time there’s a little bubble like asinine controversies over allowing turbans for RCMP officers or within the hallowed halls of the Canadian Legion, we’re reminded that the sort of prejudice that led to the Kamagata Maru fiasco still persists, if a lot more subtly.
I don’t think it had much to do with why the investigation was so thoroughly bolloxed, though – I think that had more to do with grudges between the RCMP and the shiny new CSIS. Still “us vs. them,” just a different “us” and “them.”
