Cancel Culture and Virtue Signaling -- What’s the case against them?

Tweeting is arson now?

Rogan can still say what he wants, and associate with whom he wants. Unless they don’t want to associate with him anymore - they have that freedom too.

Oh, so is my freedom of speech being violated because Spotify hasn’t offered me a 100 million dollar contract?

He can exercise it all he wants. He can say anything he wants. And I can say Spotify should drop him. If they do, he can still say anything he wants.

In all fairness I don’t remember reading that she was fired, just that Mark Meadows had to leave the room during Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation hearings on account of this very important matter of liking Taylor Swift on Instagram.

So, how does this work? Whoever speaks first doesn’t get criticism? This doesn’t seem well thought out. /Captain Obvious

I guess so.

So, I think that Spotify should drop Joe Rogan. And if anyone disagrees with me, they are violating my civil rights, just like burning down my house and breaking my kneecaps.

I’ll have to double check, but I’m pretty sure I don’t have a 100 million dollar deal with Spotify. That’s a tool Joe Rogan has that I definitely do not have. The only tool I have is a guarantee that the government won’t lock me up because they don’t like what I say. That’s a tool Joe Rogan also has. It’s a tool he still has if he loses that $100 million dollar Spotify deal.

I have no idea what the contract looks like, but I would be surprised if Spotify wouldn’t have to pay out a substantial, if not all of, the contract even if they drop his show.

He will still have free speech, and a whole lot of money.

Sounds good to me! I agree and think that Spotify should drop Rogan. And I’ll urge musicians to follow the examples set by Crosby and others. Rogan and his supporters can advocate differently if they want.

Sorry, you’re too late. Someone above already wants Joe Rogan to stay, so you’d be canceling them.

ETA: Can we at least all agree that Rogan is a tool?

Twitter is incapable of censoring someone, aside from kicking them off Twitter. Which isn’t censorship, since Twitter is not public property, but rather a private company.

Oh I see what’s going on here. Shame on me for giving it the attention.

FTR, I just got kicked off Facebook for two days for telling a homophobe to go fuck himself.

My free speech rights remain fully intact.

But “cancel culture” has become ideological litmus test for people to measure up 100% to current PC standards. So, US Grant, who put his life on the line to destroy Confederacy/end slavery, is still condemned–and had his statue removed-because he inherited 1 slave from his wife and freed him. Good deeds don’t count if you make one deviation from rules. When will vegans/vegetarians start making their demands known? While it may not matter to Dopers, as a Christian, “cancel culture” bothers me for absence of repentance/forgiveness.

Actually, Grant’s statue was pulled down because of all the Indians he killed.

Yes, this is precisely what I want. Because if I want to retain the right to kick someone off of this board for being a homophobe, I have to support Facebook’s right to kick me off of their board for telling a homophobe to fuck off.

Facebook gets to decide what’s acceptable speech on Facebook. I get to decide what’s acceptable speech in my living room. The same principle applies to both. Facebook gets to decide on Facebook, I get to decide for my living room.

I’m pretty sure ( call it 95%) I read that she WAS fired. I don’t remember the source but I think it was Stephanie Grisham’s book, so I don’t have a link.

I’m okay with Facebook having the right to do what they want with their own property, even when it’s something that I don’t personally like. Because I want to have the right to do what I want with my own property, even if someone else doesn’t like it.
