Could the mess at the nuclear plant in Fukushima been avoided if they’d been using Candu reactors?
The mess at Fukushima could have been avoided if they had used nearly any other design. There has been a lot of improvement in reactor design since the GE Mark 1 units used at Fukushima were built. Candu reactors are designed with a large amount of heat capacity and passive cooling so they should handle a loss of cooling incident better than the Fukushima plant did, but the same is true of essentially any modern reactor design.
I can’t go for that.
No CANDU.
