Canine Prostate Cancer--Please tell me everything you know

The little bit of googling I’ve done is about what the radiologist told me today and I can’t do anymore beacause I can’t stand reading sentences like:

anymore.

We have to go back tomorrow for the biopsy to actually confirm what was seen in the ultrasound and some more tests to see if the cancer hasn’t metastasized yet, so there is sort of a little ray of hope.

If it hasn’t metastasized, can anyone tell me more about removing the prostate? It seems a bad option in a deck stuffed with worse options, but I’d really like more information if anyone has it to give.

Tahoe is our silly, wonderful baby boy. He’s only 8 years and five months old and was neutered at five months, this shouldn’t be happening. I’ve loved every day, every minute with this little clown, and I just can’t believe this.

Thats really sad news, my own dog was neutered after the discoverey of prostate cancer and died many years later from other causes, so I hope there might be some chance .

Thank you bluezooky I really appreciate that. All the pages on the internet are so dire, and so limited in actual information about where to go (action plan treatment-wise), what to do for palliative care, what to watch out for after diagnosis. Like they just assume, boom, diagnosis, the end.
We’re not giving up, we want as much time as we can get with the best quality of life possible.

His lungs are clear. He starts chemo on Monday.

I have no experience with it, but I want to say best of luck to you and Tahoe. May the treatment be successful and give you many more years together.

Since this is a fairly unusual disease, you may want to seek out the opinion of a veterinarian oncologist if you haven’t already done so. There is a list here: Locate / find a veterinary oncologist in the United States
I’m definitely sorry to hear your little buddy is dealing with this. He looks like a sweet dog.

lavenderviolet thank you so much for that link!
There seems to be excellent information there about what to do now and what to watch for–we’re starting chemo on Monday, he’ll be having IV chemo and an oral pill to be taken daily (and that’s about the extent of what I know) so we’ll see how that goes, and probably see about sending his films & biopsy results off for second opinions and more options if need be.
It’s definitely a carcinoma, and given the location (it can even be felt during the rectal exam) it’s almost certain to be prostate cancer. Surgery is apparently not an option, so it’s all about trying to get it to shrink and delay its spread while preserving his quality of life.
Fingers crossed please that he is one of those who just fly through chemo with no ill effects felt, but that it works. That’s what we’re hoping for. I just want more good times. It’ll never be enough, but we’ll take whatever we can.

Just saw an article on CNN this morning about approval of a new cancer drug for dogs:

Best of luck to you and your buddy.
