Can't Set XP Clock? Why?

A friend called me this morning. He can’t set his clock in Windows XP Pro. He’s logged on as an administrator, but every time he tries to click on the clock or set it using an outboard synch program, he receives a message stating that he does not have the necessary permissions to perform this function.

I know there’s a setting I’m missing. Anyone help me out here?

Is he actually logged in as the administrator account, or merely an account with admin access? They are two different things, and that might be the reason.

There’s only two accoutns on his computer, the main account and the guest account.

The main account says “Computer Administrator”.

Xp does not call there account Computer Administrator. He is not logged on the correct account it seems.

Funny…Mine does.

It says my computer logon, then underneath it it says “Computer Administrator.”

Go to Control Panel > User Accounts - and you’ll see that yours says the same thing.

Go to Start|Run, type gpedit.msc, hit OK, drill down to Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies and click on User Rights Assignment in the left pane. In the right pane, double-click on Change the system time. Add the Administrators group.

If the computer is joined to a domain then this setting could be superseded by group policy.

I have run into this problem on computers at work several times. It was annoying because I wasn’t trying to set the time, I was just trying to open the calendar to see what day a date fell on, it wouldn’t even let me do that.
