Mounted to a wall, granted. The flag in that photo is pretty obviously on a staff placed into a bracket on the house. Raising that staff to vertical would need to keep the union on the TOP, yes?

Not always. When displayed horizontally on the side of something with a “front”, the stars go in the upper right to imply forward motion. E.g., a flag patch on the right arm of a uniform.

Photographic composition has nothing to do with flag protocol. The display here is correct as is, and would definitely be wrong if reversed.
However, the composition does show her to be a clueless moron.

I can’t quite tell for sure either, but I kinda think I can make out some parts of four fingers outside the trigger guard. But just barely, and not for sure.

I think you are right. At first I thought that could have just been a reflection in a really grainy photograph, but looking closely, you are right.
