Can't watch these kinds of films anymore.

Was just wondering if any other members tend to have their taste in movies change as they get older. This is more referring to violence and gore in films, but it can go for any type really.

I myself have noticed that I don’t care to see overly gory films anymore. A perfect example is the Saw franchise. I remember when the first one came out about 10 years ago, I was fine with it … enjoyed it actually. I never saw any of the sequels but I have seen parts of them in the past year or so and I can barely watch. I just can’t seem to watch the carnage anymore. It just bothers me.

I can still watch a scary film, no problem, but if it has lots of blood and gore, well, I have to turn my head away.

Any one else experience this?

I’ve never liked extreme gore (I’ve avoided all Saw movies) but at one time Aliens was one of my all-time favorite movies. I’m not sure I would like it today.

Yeah, I’m with you, one day I just had enough. I don’t watch grisly, realistic, cop dramas getting inside the head of some whackjob, reviewing crime scenes, etc. People getting slaughtered, raped, tortured, sorry just don’t want to watch that any more. So I don’t.

One of the best decisions I ever made. In one stroke, it was, at once, a totally better world!

After 9/11, I found it very hard to watch movies in which police were made to look like the bad guys, or they had to chase the hero, or something.

I used to like classic horror & suspense; Hitchcock, Frankenstein films, etc.

But these new slasher and torture porn films just turn me off.

I never cared for horror films in the first place. I get pissed off by the cheap manipulation.

Now, I’ve stopped watching superhero films or anything that that has a fight scene that lasts more than two or three minutes. Fight scenes always Bored me and I’ve lost my tolerance for them. At best, they are something to be endured until the interesting stuff comes along.

I’m not sure if there was ever a time when I was okay with shaky-cam, but after Hardcore Henry the idea brings on a mild touch of Clockwork Orange nausea.

The sight of Sharlto Copley is now enough to make me a bit queasy and I hope it’s not permanent because I like Sharlto Copley.

I’ve never liked gore, and that hasn’t changed.

However, I find I can’t watch a lot of 1980’s sci-fi/fantasy movies without cringing (Krull, Beastmaster, Logan’s Run) whereas I loved 'em early on. Perhaps I’m spoiled by the better effects and acting in later movies.

I can handle it if it’s a part of a compelling story. I cannot handle it if it’s stupid or torture porn.

As ashamed as I am to admit it, the *Saw * franchise is one of my guilty pleasures. I watched the entire series back-to-back recently. I like the main character, and I like the way the films play a surprisingly long game with the plot over all the sequels. I like some of the twistiness, and the way the series actually touches on some deep moral and existential issues now and then. I mean, none of the films are great works of art by any stretch, but I find them enjoyable.

However: I can’t watch the gory parts. I mean literally. I have to close my eyes, and sometimes mute the sound, until those bits are over.

And, yes, I understand that this is a bit like watching porn for the plot.

Gore’s never bothered me (well, other than Al :dubious:).

But pets dying in movies pretty much ruin me from watching something a second time. And I always get really nervous when a dog or cat shows up in a movie with a high body count.

Yes, I’ve definitely changd in the same way as I’ve gotten older. Not only am I no longer interested in gore, but if you’re going to kill a child to create pathos in the plot and manipulate me, I will pretty much turn off the movie right then.

I have changed. I used to watch current movies/TV as a kid. Today I watch old movies/TV shows. I cannot stand most of the crap on TV today…2 broke girls? WTF? Sleep Hallow?.. I just don’t get most of these shows, either the humor or the way they just drag stories into infinite stupidity like from headless horsemen to demons and witches…lol. Alas I only know that much because my wife watches them and I catch bits and pieces from the background.

I actually tend to enjoy old films, Noir and older horrors especially and old sitcoms so I watch a lot of METV, Retro TV…etc. I do love horror movies in general but I find many of the modern ones a bit meh…hot blondes that save the day, scary kids, long black haired girls…It’s repeated too often and I do not find it plausible. Sorry but that big breasted 18 yr old is not likely to be a sole survivor over a 35 year old that has more experience and wisdom.
If you watch the original “The Fog” the actors are middle aged and realistic without being overly good looking. The newer remake has an entire town full of college kids…just something of reality is lacking imo.

I agree. It’s like a prank or practical joke. When a character opens the door and suddenly comes face-to-face with the monster/ghost/murderer - yes, it makes you jump. But I don’t enjoy that feeling at all, and usually. as Chuck says. it’s just an illogical contrivance.

Now you can take the guess-work out.

I never really liked them, but now I just don’t watch movies with explicit gore or casual violence.

I assume it’s better these days?

I used to like superhero movies, but I haven’t had any interest in any of the recent IronMan or Avenger movies. They just look stupid to me. Especially compared to the Netflix versions of Daredevil and Jessica Jones.

I can watch the occasional over-the-top violent film, such as Machete or the new Bruce Campbell series, but I’ve never been into torture and gore. No part of it is ‘entertaining’ to me and frankly, I worry about people who are overly entertained by it.

I wouldn’t say that I’ve gotten too old, but I haven’t been able to watch a suspense/thriller since Arlington Road. That movie broke me.

I used to enjoy romantic comedies, but not anymore. They just bore me to tears.

I never used to enjoy science fiction, but it’s a favorite genre for me now.
